The tree does not tolerate excessive moisture. So when cleaning you should not take a large amount of water and plenty of detergents. It is better to wipe the stairs soaked in a weak solution, preferably a neutral detergent and then a well-wrung cloth.

If you need to clean the unpainted wooden stairs well, then you can wet a small area with hot soapy water, wipe it well with a tough brush, rinse it with water and wipe dry with a thick sacking cloth. Fat stain should be removed while it is fresh, then it is easily cleaned with sandpaper. Also spots of fat can be sprinkled with talcum powder or kaolin, covered with blotting paper and ironed over with a not very hot iron. Old grease stains can be removed with turpentine. If mold stains from high dampness can be removed with gasoline.

If the staircase is painted, then strong contamination is washed off with water with the addition of ammonia (2 tbsp of ammonia are taken into a bucket of water). Glitter painted wood will give rubbing a mixture of vegetable oil and denatured alcohol in equal shares, after drying, rub with cloth to shine. The tree needs special care. For example, in order to prevent grinder beetles, you should not clutter up the space near the stairs, and air the room itself more often. Also, for the purpose of prevention, non-varnished wood should be cleaned every six months or a year with a solution of sodium fluoride or silicon fluoride (200-250 g of the substance should be diluted with a bucket of hot water, mixed thoroughly and cooled). Also suitable for processing composition of turpentine, wax, paraffin and creolin, taken in a ratio of 100: 5: 5: 3.

Inaccurate mechanical effects, including causing scratches and chips, the effect of time, damage by pests and similar problems do not in the best way affect the state and appearance of the wooden staircase. Many minor defects can be fixed by yourself.
Small grooves, scratches and cracks are sealed with putty, which consists of a mixture of fine sawdust and glue. To do this, first remove the defect area, then fill it with putty. After drying, sanding is required, tinted to match the base and lacquer if necessary. You can also purchase a tone latex compound designed for wood, which is applied with a spatula to a scratch or dent and left to dry. On top of the applied restorer for wood.

Also cracks can be stuck. It is more convenient to perform, if it is possible to remove the damaged part. The crack is cleared of dirt and dust, dried and poured with hot wood glue, after which the part should be kept under pressure before drying. Chips and flakes are glued with joiner's glue.

Even small dents can be leveled. To do this, on the surface of the recess make a few scratches or cuts, and then treated with steam (it is best to press a hot iron through a wet cloth). Such a wet-heat treatment allows the wood fibers to expand, which leads to the alignment of dents. After the processed place dries, polishing and varnishing is made. If the damage of wood by fungus has occurred, the affected areas should be treated with a warm solution of water, iron sulphate and salt in the proportion of 4x1x1 by weight.

The destruction of the staircase by woody insects (timely detected until the pests have been turned into dust) requires treatment with a disinfectant solution. Each hole is filled with a solution of sodium fluoride (poisonous substance, use carefully) with a syringe, then all surfaces are wiped with the same solution. After drying, the damaged areas should be poured with molten paraffin, which should be colored with the pigment to the color of the product.
