Top 10 varieties of hydrangeas
Hortensia - lush and long-blooming deciduous shrub. The thyroid inflorescences consist of fertile (bisexual) and sterile (infertile) flowers. They can be located chaotically, but more often they form a rickety inflorescence with fertile flowers in the center and sterile along the edge. There are varieties with only one type of flowers. Scutellum may be flat, spherical, hemispherical or pyramidal. Trees and paniculate hydrangeas are well established in Central Russia, largely due to their resilience. In the suburbs, hydrangeas grow best in the open sun, in the southern regions of Russia they are recommended to be planted in partial shade. In the care, it is important to ensure regular and abundant watering (for good reason the Latin name for hydrangea, hydrangea, is translated as “a vessel with water”). About the best varieties of hydrangeas, we describe in detail in our review.
In Russia, there are common varieties of 3 types of hydrangea: tree, paniculate and large-leaved.
Hydrangea paniculata (Hydrangea paniculata). Shrub or shtambovy tree height of 2 - 5 m. Wild-growing forms are found in Japan and China. Paniculata hydrangeas Differs in dark green leaves and burgundy shoots. Inflorescences are formed on the shoots of the current year. The buds bloom very slowly, so abundant mass flowering occurs in August. The inflorescence is a pyramidal shield, resembling a panicle. At the time of dissolution there is a greenish tint, then the color becomes pure white or cream, and by the autumn pinkish tones with a brick tint and a greenish tint again appear. A flowering shrub attracts bees with its scent and is a good honey plant. High frost resistance of the species makes it possible to grow it even in the North-West region. In Moscow, panicled hydrangeas overwinter without shelter. Shoots quickly turn wood and winter well.
Hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens). Shrub from 1 to 3 m high comes from North America. Unpretentious and winter-hardy. Loves shading. Able to tolerate short-term drought: drooping leaves "come to life" immediately after abundant watering. Spherical or flat plates are formed on the tops of annual shoots. At the beginning of flowering inflorescences have a greenish tint, and in full dissolution become cream. Fertile flowers predominate in inflorescences, and a few are sterile. But there are varieties with sterile inflorescences. Guards are large, with a diameter of 10 - 15 to 20 cm. It blooms from June to September. Young growth often does not ripen and freezes, but after spring pruning the bush grows well. Frosting does not affect flowering.
Large-leaved hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). Shrub height of 1 - 2 m. In the winter leaves with green grassy shoots, which woody only next year. This biological feature leads to a strong freezing of young growth in a harsh climate. In winter, all leaves are removed, shoots are tied, bent to the ground and covered with lutrasil. Inflorescences are not formed on all annual shoots, so the flowering is not so abundant, unlike other types of hydrangea. Inflorescences in diameter exceed 20 cm. Dwarf varieties are good for container growing. The shape and color of inflorescences varied. Varieties of "changeable" varieties can change the color of the inflorescences depending on the chemical composition of the soil. Large-leaved hydrangeas grow best on acidic soils.

The variety is good, but not for lazy growers. It requires proper treatment and a lot of attention. The adult bush winters under shelter and blooms twice and very plentifully. |
All hydrangeas love frequent and abundant watering. For planting choose windproof areas from the south or east side. In landscape design, hydrangea is used as a soliter on the lawn or in compositions with rose, clematis, lilies, spirea, rhododendrons, barberries, lilacs and conifers. When choosing neighbors, not only aesthetic compatibility is taken into account, but also general requirements for soil composition and care. Hydrangeas equally well complement the garden in a natural, natural style and in a subtle Japanese. The hedges of different varieties of the same species look spectacular.
