Power
The most important, or rather the main parameter. It is selected based on the size of the room. The simplest common calculation method is 1 kW per 10 m². Relevant for standard (up to 3 m) ceiling height. If it is higher, it is not the area (s) that is taken, but the volume (s * h). We divide it by a special factor of 30, we get the required power value:
W = s * h / 30.
When using heaters (including oil) in unheated premises (cottage, garage, warehouse), the formula is somewhat different:
W = k * v * ΔT / 860,
where v is the cubic volume of the room, ΔT is the difference between the desired inside and “outboard” temperature, 860 is a constant value for converting kcal / hour to kW.
In addition, a thermal insulation coefficient (k) is applied:
- 0.6-0.9 - for well-insulated houses;
- 1-1.9 - for standard rooms of medium insulation level;
- 2-2.9 - for buildings with single brickwork, simple roofing and window construction;
- 3-4 - for objects without thermal insulation (wooden or metal).
Dimensions of the device
For this parameter, besides purely aesthetic, there is also a practical component. The size of an oil heater is usually directly dependent on its capacity. The most common formats: models up to 1 kW have 3-5 sections, for 1.5 kW they are usually 5-7, for 2 kW - 9-10, and for the most powerful varieties 2.5-3 kW - 11-13.
Another thing is that not only the number of edges, but also their configuration is important. Small narrow and thicker heat is stronger, and wide and flat provide better heat transfer, more secure. For families with young children, models with a protective casing on the case are relevant, it is a pity only to wash them is not very convenient.
Additional features
Auxiliary functions for someone can be really useful, but someone does well without them and does not consider it necessary to pay extra for it. A few examples:
- Stand Dryer. It is convenient when, in fact, there is a need (it is strictly forbidden to place anything directly on the working surface of oil heaters). That's just the size of it is small. Experienced housewives usually purchase a separate large folding dryer and place an oil heater under it or near it.
- All kinds of built-in humidifiers, ionizers and other marketing tricks Some manufacturers may take place, but their effectiveness is rather doubtful.
- Built-in fan. It really helps to warm up the cold room of the calculated dimensions faster and, as an option, to warm the limbs that are chilled from frost. However, the cost increases significantly, the noise background increases, plus this option “steals” some of the total power. It is also worth noting that the accelerated exit to a comfortable temperature does not mean that the oil heater with a fan is designed for a large area.
Reliability and safety
Currently, almost all oil heaters, which are sold in Russia, are made in China. Sometimes you can find joint production. Of course, radiators are manufactured under license from one of the European firms, but practice shows that this does not greatly affect the quality. Therefore, the criterion of "reliability" should be taken into account not the company that will be written on the box with the new heater, but functions that will increase safety when using the device.
