Mastech МAS838
900
For everyone who has ever worked with electrics or electronics at least at the amateur level, the numbers “838” are familiar very well - remember the angular black tester boxes that appeared back in the 90s in stores of radio components?
Well, our good old friend M-838 is still in service and is produced under a variety of brands. It is worth it, of course, not a hundred rubles, as in the two thousandth, but still inexpensive, and the updated version of the Mastech MAS-838 also became more convenient. The former rectangular case has become more streamlined and is now equipped with a protective cover-stand, as in the "older" Mastech. The design is also close to them: the sockets for the probes have moved to the horizontal row below, the Hold button for fixing the readings has appeared. The socket for measuring the gain of bipolar transistors is now linear, not round, which, from the point of view of the author, is more convenient in most cases. It makes no sense to describe the functions of this multimeter separately: in amateur practice, it also works “for five” as before. Well and the most important thing is that he normally experiences user errors, with the exception of the roughest type of “measure current in the socket”. Main advantages:

Small and functional, good inexpensive tester. In my opinion, more convenient than others for this price. |
UNI-T UT33
700 (for model UT33B)
This line of the simplest multimeters of one of the most famous OEMs includes four devices. Model UT33A on the general background stands out quite sharply. It has an automatic range selection for measuring voltage and resistance, while for all other models of the range - manual switching. In addition, the UT33A multimeter is equipped with a panel for testing transistors, which is not available in other versions. On the other hand, this model does not have the ability to save measured readings and does not have screen backlighting. Modification C differs from the basic UT33B device by the presence of the temperature measurement function using the external thermocouple supplied. The UT33D multimeter is capable of generating a rectangular test signal. Main advantages:

Excellent enduring thing. It is pleasant to take in hand, it measures quite accurately, it is relatively cheap. If you do not need anything more difficult to measure voltage or continuity of the circuit - the best tester option. |
Victor VC830L
700
Not everyone needs devices that have an extended list of possibilities. If you are looking for an inexpensive compact multimeter that can perform the simplest measurements well, pay attention to this model. Its advantages are relatively low basic error (for this class) and a contrast screen with large numbers that are well distinguishable even at acute angles. The advantages of the device include the high category of overvoltage (CAT III according to IEC standard). The VC830L model is manufactured under different brands that may have their own characteristics. In particular, the corresponding multimeter from the Sinometer company is equipped with buttons for illuminating the screen and fixing the current reading, which makes it more convenient to use.

Simple and reliable multimeter for work "in the field." The best choice for home craftsmen and car owners who love to dig in the car yourself. |
CEM DT-101
600
Multimeter is the simplest, but is it so bad? For example, even the author often fiddles with electronics, the author can hardly remember when he last used the same block to test transistors.
So an inexpensive DT-101, made on the principle of “nothing superfluous,” will be sufficient for many of you if possible. It is easy to deal with it: there are only two nests for probes, it is not necessary to constantly switch red back and forth. The power switch is a separate one; for a cheap tester, this is a plus: their “twist” contacts go straight along the tracks of the printed circuit board, and there is no need to constantly turn the selector in both directions, turning the device on and off, wearing out the contact surface. The case is rubberized, which in case of a fall is definitely useful. True, there are small concerns for the test probe jacks: here they are not on the front panel, like most digital multimeters, but on the bottom of the case. The probes themselves are decent enough for this price. The delivery package is the simplest: a blister in which the multimeter itself, probes and the most basic instruction lie. However, do you really need a manual for such a simple device? The downside is the applied battery - instead of the usual “Crown” here is a tiny 12-volt A23. Although for the garage master this can be considered a plus - it is enough to attach the cigarette lighter plug to the multimeter in order to forget about replacing the batteries altogether. I drive a multimeter in the glove compartment just in case, so I took it specially simple and small. It measures normally, I do not need much accuracy. |
Advanced Advanced Multimeters
Testo 760-1
5 000
Fully automatic multimeter of practically professional class, made to the State Register. Do not like the circular mode selector? Well, this “smart” device was created just in such a case. To work, it is enough to choose one of the three modes (“voltage”, “current” and “everything else”), and then the multimeter itself will determine the desired range and measurement method.
The accuracy of the measurements and the width of the scale of the "Test" (yes, the Russian-speaking person will not forget this name for sure) will be suitable for most of the works. The tester can measure, among other things, a capacitance ranging from 10 nF to 100 μF, a frequency from 0.001 Hz to 512 kHz. The case protection class against dust and moisture is IP64. We especially note the ergonomics of the case and the information content of the display: it is really pleasant to work with this device. Main advantages:

Fluke 106
3 700
For a multimeter with a circular selector, this looks outwardly extremely minimalist - it doesn’t need a lot of symbols, it automatically selects the range. Although the author would prefer to the "fullavto" mode and the Up / Down buttons for manual adjustment, familiar in their correct Mastech MY-67.
Fluke 106 is not only minimalistic, but also compact: it does not take up much space, it is easy to carry in your pocket or carry in the glove compartment of a car. In height and width, many smartphones are now larger than this multimeter. And guess - why is this baby worth so much? That's right, its accuracy allowed to get into the State Register of measuring equipment, all testers must be calibrated at the factory. So his money is definitely. Main advantages:

CEM DT-61
5 900
This versatile device is a whole minilaboratory allowing to study the environment in numbers. In addition to the basic characteristics, the DT-61 multimeter is capable of measuring the temperature in a contactless manner (by the power of thermal radiation), up to very high values. In addition, the device can be used to measure the level of humidity, light and noise, so it is convenient to use it for inspections of premises for compliance with standards for labor protection. The device is able to perform both direct and relative measurements, has a data hold mode, automatic selection of the required range, a contrast display backlight and can automatically turn off after a certain idle time. The design of the multimeter meets the requirements for electrical safety at the level of categories IV for non-contact search of static electricity with voltage up to 1000 V, and III - when performing contact measurements. Mastech MS8260E
2 000
The combined device, in addition to the basic parameters, allows to measure the inductance of coils and chokes. Only the MS8260E model has such capabilities, and other features of this line have their own characteristics. For example, the ability to measure frequency, temperature or the possession of extended ranges. The multimeter is equipped with a module for testing bipolar transistors, is able to test diodes and ring the circuit for a short circuit. Ranges are switched manually, there is a backlight and the ability to capture the current readings on the screen. Main advantages:

CEM DT-2008
2 500
This multimeter certainly has no complaints about the readability of the display: the numbers are large, contrast, there is a backlight. The case is made by double casting - the soft shell is not a removable cover, but an integral part. At the same time, it goes behind the corners of the front panel far enough to protect the tester well from falling.
The functionality here, despite the external absence of “bells and whistles”, is very interesting - to the standard set here, the manufacturer added a measurement of capacitor capacitance, signal frequency and temperature. In this case, the input resistance when measuring voltage is increased to 10 MΩ (for multimeters of the initial level, it is usually about 1 MΩ). Main advantages:

The best professional level multimeters
Fluke 233
27 000
No, the multimeter in the photo is not broken. He really has the ability to separate the display from the measuring base, the radius of communication - up to 10 meters. Has it ever been possible to tighten a neck, adjusting anything in one place when the tester is connected in another? Then you will understand exactly how convenient this solution is in the practice of repairmen.
The device “knows how to” quite a lot - it is the measurement of voltages / currents with high accuracy (of course, it received its place in the State Register), including the calculation of the root-mean-square (RMS), and capacitances in the range right up to 9999 uF, and so on. Speaking of professional “Fluke”, it’s silly to talk about the list of possibilities as something that is only in the mode selector: a multimeter can work, for example, with external current clamp i1010, vacuum gauge and pressure meter PV350 ... In short, as he said in his time Fry: “Shut up and take my money!” Main advantages:

APPA 107N
18 000
Expensive, but very reliable multimeter with excellent performance. According to the class of protection, the device complies with IP64, therefore dust, splashes and a fall from a small height are not terrible for it. Not afraid of the device and overloads on the inputs - for protection against overvoltage, they are equipped with high-voltage fuses and special resistors. Accuracy of measurements in circuits with an irregular sine wave is provided by the support of the function of calculating the mean square of the instantaneous values (True RMS) - this feature is very important when servicing thyristor converters and nodes with PWM. The device is able to memorize up to 1600 last measurements and interact with computers via the RS-232 interface. The multimeter has several modes of holding the values, and the current readings are displayed not only with numbers and symbols, but also on a 42-segment linear scale.

UNI-T UT71E
12 000
Most of the bundled intrigues is something that is clearly plugged into one outlet at one end, and the other into the sockets for the test leads. Everything is simple - this device is turned on between the outlet and any electrical device to measure the power consumed by it. Next to it in the box is a USB-infrared adapter that allows you to connect a multimeter to a PC with a guarantee of galvanic isolation. With native software recorded on a CD from the same box, it will be possible to write measurement logs and build their graphs, saving data in different formats.
The multimeter itself is also not “memoryless” - the True RMS (True RMS value) measurement mode requires you to record streaming data, albeit with a small buffer size. Considering that in the operating modes with alternating current, the limiting frequency is not hundreds of hertz, but all 100 kHz, you will immediately guess that here you can talk about RMS in relation to sound equipment. And in the frequency counter mode, the top of the measurement range is 200 MHz! Well, with this set of functions and the width of the automatically tuned ranges, the multimeter even starts to seem inexpensive. Alas, the price also indicates its main disadvantage - the accuracy to the state register does not hold out. But in the home laboratory, he will definitely find his place! Main advantages:

Fluke 17B +
10 000
Multimeters of the Fluke brand are considered as a peculiar standard of measuring devices and differ in the highest reliability and accuracy of a professional level. Among the possibilities of the model 17B - measurement of DC and AC voltage (up to 1000 V), current, resistance, capacitance, frequency and temperature. The device allows you to check the diodes and ring the circuit for a short circuit. Ranges are automatically selected, but there is a button for manually scaling the results. There is a mode of relative measurements and the ability to record the current readings. Using a complete thermocouple, the multimeter allows you to determine the temperature in the most practical range. In the line of the company there is a more simple and affordable model Fluke 15B +. It is made on the same element base and in a similar case, but does not have some functions and measurement modes. But it costs almost half the price. Main advantages:

If you constantly have to work with the device and the possibilities allow you, it is better to spend money once and use it all your life than regularly to buy cheap stuff. |
Which multimeter is better to buy?
Digital or analog? The switch devices have practically sunk into oblivion, although they have several advantages (for example, stable operation in the presence of interference). Most of the multimeters on the market are digital. In some advanced models there is a kind of analogue of the linear scale, but its readings are always duplicated in symbolic form.
One of the criteria for choosing a tester is bit depth(the number of characters displayed on the display). As a rule, multimeters of mass use are equipped with a display with a “3.5” capacity. This means that the last three characters on the screen can show any numbers (from 0 to 9), and the first one to some limit value (for example, from 0 to 4). In other words, the largest number that such a display is capable of displaying is 4999. For devices of a professional level, the bit depth is higher.
AccuracyThe tester does not directly depend on the digit capacity. The accuracy of the measurements depends on the accuracy of the ADC, on the materials from which the instrument is made, on the presence or absence of interference, on the quality of the calibration performed.
A sign of the class of the multimeter can be considered inclusion in the State Register of measuring instruments. For domestic use, this criterion does not matter, but in professional activities such devices are regularly checked and the corresponding registration is required.
Function automatic switching of measuring ranges increases the usability of the device, only here has its own peculiarity. Budget models have an autodetection process that takes a lot of time. If you have to measure often and in large quantities — delays can be annoying.
Finally, for both amateurs and professionals, an important criterion can be True RMS mode. Devices without its support are not able to adequately measure the characteristics of AC circuits, in which the waveform is very different from the correct sinusoid. In particular, these are power supplies with PWM and most phase controlled thyristor converters.
