Let's start with the connection method. The easiest and cheapest way, of course, is to use simple jacks, and if the headset has a 4-pin jack, then it is also suitable for a phone or tablet. But the wire will inevitably interfere, on cheap headsets will also be prone to cliffs and fractures. With cheap sound cards, the sound quality will be not so hot, especially at the microphone: a long connecting wire not only dampens the amplitude of the signal, which is already weak, but also “enriches” it with interference. In this respect, the USB models are more interesting: they “serve” the computer with already digitized sound, allow digital volume control.
On the volume control, let us say separately: wherever there is a regulator (on the cord or headphone case), the problem will be common: a miniature stereopotentiometer will sooner or later begin to “rustle” when adjusted, and an imbalance along the right-left channel is possible due to uneven wear of the tracks. The "number" of these problems is devoid.
