Top 10 pickling cucumbers
Growing vegetables in our plot, we strive to preserve the crop for winter consumption. Both experienced and novice vegetable growers know that not all cucumbers are suitable for preservation. Even the “universal” tag on the bag with seeds does not guarantee that pickled cucumbers will be dense, fragrant and crunchy.
You can independently determine by the fruits, whether cucumbers will be successful in salting. Here are the main signs of pickling cucumbers:
- the seed chamber occupies no more than 20% of the volume of the fetus;
- dark uniform color;
- thin but firm skin;
- large tubercles;
- chernoshipost (pickling hybrids of the new generation may have white spikes);
- thick flesh.
For salting and marinating using different varieties and hybrids. In the marinade, finely-podded and white-cucumber cucumbers are good, which are often classified as salad.

Each gardener has his own list of pickles for pickling, as they are always planted in addition to the salad. If there is no possibility to place many varieties, try to choose versatile, which are good in fresh form, and remain strong and crispy in barrels. Varieties and hybrids of cucumbers from our selection are more often recommended for comprehensive use.
Correctly pick up a pickling variety or hybrid is only part of the solution. Not all fruits, even with the best hybrid for conservation, will be ideal in cans and barrels. Our recommendations for picking cucumbers for pickling:
- the collection is carried out in the early morning hours when all parts of the plant have a high turgor - so the greengrass fade more slowly and remain elastic longer;
- the first harvest is better to put on the salad - they will not leave a good product;
- prevent overgrowth of fruits - tear gherkins 5–9 cm long or greens 9–12 cm long;
- use mineral supplements to increase the sugar content and improve the taste.
