The word "Nikon" for the Orthodox Russian is associated with the name of the Patriarch of All Russia. Of course, this is just a coincidence. The name of the Japanese company (by the way, correctly pronounced with the accent on the second syllable) is composed of the words "Nippon Kogaku", which translates roughly as "Japanese optics." The company is definitely the patriarch of the industry. It was created in the memorable to us in 1917, but, unlike the Soviet regime, it lives and survives.
The Japanese giant (Nikon is none other than one of the many divisions of the Mitsubishi Group) celebrated its 100th anniversary this year — one of the leading sales of photographic equipment and interchangeable lenses for it — this year in 1917, after the merger of three companies, Nippon Kogaku Kokyo KK, subsequently and became known to all "Nikon".
However, until the end of World War II, the cameras for the company were not so important - in the first place, it was engaged in the production of optical instruments for the military industry and the army. Naturally, the defeat in the war and the ensuing restrictions led to the need to look for new sources of income, and, having vast experience in the manufacture of optics, it would be strange not to turn to photography.
The first Nikon camera appeared in 1946, and it was then that Nikon broke off relations with Canon, the supplier of lenses for which he was before. This can be considered a landmark event - it is thanks to him that we have excellent cameras and equally beautiful Canon optics, which we wrote about not so long ago. And this step was successful: the company was able to successfully compete with European manufacturers in quality, Nikon cameras gained popularity among reporters and photo artists, not to mention amateurs.
Since then, much has changed, but Nikon is considered to be one of the best manufacturers of photographic equipment. This is confirmed by the sales, and the opinion of photographers, and a solid list of prestigious awards. Just look at the results of 2019 - Nicon cameras are named the best:
- The best entry-level SLR camera version TIPA: Nikon D3500
- The best full-frame semi-professional camera version TIPA: Nikon Z 6
- The best full-frame professional camera version TIPA: Nikon Z 7
- EISA's Best Professional SLR Camera: Nikon D850
As you can see, even taking into account how actively Fujifilm and Sony come on the heels of the masters lately, Nikon still has something to show even in the face of increasing competition.
Therefore, we decided to offer our readers a brief overview of the best Nikon cameras in groups that are different in price and designation.

Nikon Best Compact Cameras
24 990
A completely compact camera does not terrify the price, but is very interesting for its capabilities - which is only worth the Nikkor lens with a 35x zoom! A decent lens aperture for this class (3.4–6.9) with a focal length range of 24–840 mm (35 mm equivalent) allows the amateur photographer to significantly expand their capabilities: to find a brighter camera that can shoot objects at a considerable distance, for this money is very difficult.
The more prepared user will be somewhat disappointed by the matrix: the use of size 1 / 2.3 ”was the price paid for compactness, and hence the increased noise in low light and maximum sensitivity values (the settings allow you to set it to ISO 3200). But there are excellent opportunities for manual adjustment: you can set the shutter speed and aperture, and manually move the autofocus point. The screen has the ability to tilt for shooting from uncomfortable positions (well, for selfies, of course), and image stabilization is always useful when shooting with it. At the same time, the camera is also endowed with the possibility of video shooting in 4K - for a relatively inexpensive compact, this is a serious advantage. It is a pity that the camera cannot save RAW, although the built-in JPEG is quite good - you can successfully print photos in A4 format without risking to see excessive smoothing and without losing sharpness. Cute and easy to manage the camera, so even with great zoom - almost ultrazoom in a compact format! |

One of the cheapest cameras for our time is cheaper than the frank "Chinese", unlike the Coolpix A100, which is also capable of taking good pictures. The camera is very compact and easy to learn - for those who just need to “press a button and get a result,” it is just designed. The zoom here is only fivefold, but the equivalent focal length range of 26-130 mm is enough in most cases amateur shooting. The luminosity of the optics and capabilities of a 20.3-megapixel camera in bright light is enough for good shots, but at dusk it’s worth remembering that the camera is over seven thousand with 1 / 2.3 ”matrix and should not hit with low noise at high ISO values. Meanwhile, the quality of the photo A100 is ready to confidently argue with the "older» Canon IXUS, and the "younger" and often surpass. Main advantages:

Nikon's best ultrazoom
Nikon Coolpix P1000
75 400
This camera mimics well under the “SLR”, but, of course, the non-removable lens easily gives it out. But what a lens: a record 125x zoom makes you think of amateur astronomy right away. At the same time, having crazy 3 meters of equivalent focal length at the “long end”, the lens is narrowed only at f / 8, which, you see, is excellent for a compact ultrazoom. In addition, there is a stabilizer for optics - here it is certainly mandatory, although it will still not be possible to shoot with such a maximum EGF from the hands. But on moderate focal lengths, it will allow, say, to do photohunting, without later removing dozens of photos due to the “jiggle” with curses. Yes, and do not forget about digital zoom: together with optical it allows you to get EGF up to 12 meters, mamma mia! Alas, the matrix spoils everything: even with back light, but not even the APS-C is the usual 16.3-megapixel sensor of 1 / 2.3 format. Let here already and the opportunity to shoot in RAW, but this gives advantages only in the expo and color correction. But “soapiness”, dislike for high ISO, alas, is traditional for such matrices - but within reasonable limits, in its class, the P1000 is unambiguously in the lead. The camera can now work with 4K video. Add to this the widest range of focal lengths and the ability to connect an external microphone, do not forget about the optical stabilizer - this is your universal videographer tool. But not everyone will like the “walking” camera: it weighs almost one and a half kilograms, of which the lion’s share, of course, is the merit of the lens. Nikon Z 6 Kit

This Nikon camera, presented together with the Z7 and which became, in fact, its “cropped” version, just as well with it got its laurels from TIPA, only in another nomination: Best Full Frame Camera Expert 2019. So, and what exactly "truncation"? Let's go point by point. The matrix remained full-frame, but almost half the resolution - 25.28 megapixels. But this also allows you to easily print photos in A2-A3 formats, but the requirements for optics are less due to the larger physical pixels (recall the diffraction limit and other optical troubles). It's funny, but the ISO range here has become even wider than that of the Z7 - again, thanks to the pixels with a larger physical size, although you are unlikely to need to pick up the photosensitivity up to 204,800. phase autofocus was decently less (273). What camera is definitely losing and older, and the more "Nikon" SLR - so it is in autonomy: 310 frames by the method of CIPA? Are you seriously? Yes, of course, the matrix, its stabilizer, and the optical viewfinder (excellent, we note) “eat” electricity as if not in themselves, but when buying, you should immediately think about spare batteries and a charger for several sockets. Nikon's Best Entry Level SLR Cameras
Nikon D3500 Kit
30 160
According to TIPA version, the Best DSLR Camera 2019 is exactly the D3500 camera, the current flagship of the Nikon’s most famous cinema camera. Having kept the main features of the previous camera D3400 - 11-point autofocus, 24-megapixel matrix, the camera became lighter, thinner and more ergonomic. The buttons, for example, “moved” to the right side of the back wall from the left - they can finally be used by holding the camera on the wrist strap on weight when the second hand is busy. I am glad that the company did not support the current fashion in the lower segment of the DSLRs to thrust the battery and the memory card slot under one cover: a battery grip, a tripod, and a belt do not interfere with quick access to the card. Screen - fixed, without touch control. In this regard, the possibility of photo and video from uncomfortable positions suffered, and there is no convenient touch autofocus in live view mode. Of course, in the four-digit Canon series this is not the case either - but, having paid several thousand, you can already take the EOS 200D, which does not play in favor of the D3500. But in favor of the camera Nikon is its autonomy - on a single battery charge, he quietly makes up to a thousand photos, here the "boots" are still clearly losing. Take a camera for a weekend trip? The ability not to carry spare batteries, like the compactness of the D3500, is definitely “in cash”. And what else to demand from a good "DSLR for dummies"? Main advantages:

"The world's best entry-level SLR" in 2017, created by Nikon, is still a little expensive by the standards of our country - competitors from the company with the letter "K" are able to offer far more advantageous purchases.
However, let us begin with the merits: first of all, beginners will probably like the control from the touch screen - the camera is easy to master, even if before that you had only photographed with a smartphone. APS-C matrix of 24 megapixels is very stupid, even at high ISO values, autofocus is carried out at 39 points, 9 of them are cross. The camera is also useful for video shooting - in addition to supporting 1080p / 60fps, it is convenient to turn the screen as you please, shooting in the most bizarre poses. There is a microphone input. Another feature of the camera will be appreciated not only by beginners not accustomed to the weight of SLR cameras, but also by travelers: using carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic for the case, Nikon engineers created a quite dimensional camera with a weight of less than half a kilo, without sacrificing strength. Controlling the camera is very simple and straightforward, and she herself sits perfectly in hand - well, if finances allow, then you really should start exploring the world of mirror technology with it. Best Nikon SLR cameras of the middle class

Another laureate of 2017 continues the tradition of the seven thousandth series, successfully combining the functionality of a professional camera with the simplicity of amateur. The first thing that the eye clings to in the list of characteristics is the monstrous range of matrix sensitivity values from ISO 100 to ISO 51200, expandable to the maximum ISO 1640000 (!!!). No, we were not mistaken with the number of zeros. Another thing is that at such settings the noise level is excessive - yet the matrix of 23.5x15.6 mm (24 Mp) in size is far from the top fullframes. The Expeed 5 processor allows continuous shooting at a speed of 8 frames per second, while the buffer can hold up to 50 images in the RAW format or 100 jeeps. The autofocus system Advanced Multi-Cam 3500DX here is inherited from the professional segment of the previous series, so its capabilities are enough for the eyes. At the same time, in addition to the electronic drive, the camera also retained the mechanical one - if you have Nikkory in your storeroom under the screwdriver, they will not have to gather dust on the shelf. The metering system is also unchanged from the Nikon D500. Main advantages:

The best professional SLR cameras Nikon

The current flagship of the professional series, as befits, has the dimensions of cinder block and the price of a new budget sedan. In comparison, even the top-end Canon EOS 1D X Mark II looks affordable - the price difference of more than 100 thousand rubles will convince many buyers to make their choice against Nikon.
Such cameras are often called “Olympic” - they are not just brought to the market before the next Olympiad, they are also completely “honed” for reportage photography: from whatever position and with what speed the photographer shoots, they must ensure a high-quality frame. And, of course, the metal casing can withstand bathing, dust storms, falls and kicks - but you shouldn’t drop almost a half pound “carcass” on your feet. The full-size matrix has only 20.8 megapixels, but it provides an exceptionally high quality of images and the lowest noise among competitors. The new processor EXPEED 5 significantly increased the performance of signal processing in comparison with the previous flagship (D4 used Expeed 4). The maximum ISO 3280000 (substitute the necessary number of exclamation marks yourself) - rather a marketing move or a chance to document some event in the dark than the opportunity to get a decent photo on such a setting. Nikon D850 Body
189 990
If the “elephant” D5 is first of all a “reportage”, then the D850 is a full-fledged universal, capable of at least a studio “artist”, at least of documenting travels, at least of the same reportages. Traditionally, putting on a medal by TIPA, Reddot, DXOMark, DPReview, IF Design Award and Imaging Resource, Nikon does not suffer modesty, writing on its website in the section on this camera in large print: “Absolute perfection. Complete impeccability. Cowering from the sugary Oskomina, remember George Martin - even the Immaculate Something is missing. Strangely enough, the simplest thing is missing here: phase autofocus in live view, the camera is still slowly focusing only on contrast. And this is at a time when even in Canon’s “advanced amateur” DSLRs there is already a Dual Pixel matrix, which in Live View provides excellent focusing capabilities! For a professional camera of this level, the lack of a hybrid focus in Live View looks, you see, not at all flawless. The fact that only here there appeared a silent shooting mode in LiveView and focus-picking, the author, as an orthodox “canonist”, made a snicker slyly. But the matrix here is good - developed specifically for this model, and not inherited from the previous ones, full-frame with reverse illumination and 45.7 Mp. Clarity, light transmission, dynamic range - yes, it's all about her. Add to this 153 points of phase autofocus when using the optical viewfinder, and 99 of them - the cross. The focus “clings” quickly and accurately, compensating to some extent for the offensive “failure” in LiveView. Ergonomic camera failed. Especially note the presence of the backlight buttons - to work at dusk has become more convenient. And on energy efficiency, it deserves praise - 1,840 frames according to the CIPA methodology. In general, you will not dispute the declared professional class, but if you intend to work with LiveView often, this choice will be controversial. Main advantages:

The best Nikon security cameras
28 500
Nikon's “Unkillable and Unsinkable” camera withstands diving for 30 meters and a fall from a height of 2.4 meters. The lens offset in the corner (which makes it easier to hold the camera in a wetsuit) has a fivefold zoom (equivalent focal lengths from 24 to 120 mm) and an optical stabilizer. In addition, 4K video is available - and it is in such a compact format! If you switch to FullHD, then the frame rate can be raised right up to 120 - for extreme shooting, this will not be superfluous. Naturally, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are supported.
It is a pity that the compactness has limited the dimensions of the matrix - a 1 / 2.3-inch CMOS-sensor with 16 megapixels is used here. Main advantages:

The best professional mirrorless cameras Nikon
Nikon Z 7 Body
235 700
Since the advent of mirrorless fullframes to the professional segment has become an obvious given, the “Nikonovtsy” did not stand aside, having defeated the TIPA Best Full Frame Professional Camera award this year from competitors from Sony and Canon. The camera has received a new bayonet, aptly named Nikon Z and compatible with "mirror" optics through the FTZ adapter. However, not with all lenses: there are no “screwdrivers” in it - the old optics, designed for an intra-camera autofocus drive, will become manual here. But if there is a focus drive in the lens, a fast hybrid autofocus is available: 493 points of phase focus are applied on the matrix. Matrix resolution - 45.7 Mp. We, of course, do not measure quality with megapixels - but for a professional camera, the ability to print on a large format is not unimportant, and here you cannot get anywhere without high resolution (and the corresponding optics). A big plus of the matrix is the five-axis stabilization with the stated range of five stops. But what a large amount of raw data taken from the matrix, had a negative impact, so it is expected at the speed of serial shooting: no more than 9 frames per second, while “trimmed” including by megapixels Z6 gives 12 to / with. But you can’t say anything bad about the color rendition, or about the dynamic range of the matrix - and this, anyway, is more valuable than the ability to "beat the series" with a machine-gun speed. In terms of video recording, you can’t stop caring: support for 4K and FullHD at 120 fps, the ability to connect an external microphone and monitor headphones. Optics under the Z-mount are initially developed silently and without “focus breathing” when changing the focal length. The case is magnesium, dust and moisture proof, as it should be for a professional camera. The only thing that upsets him is the memory card flap. More precisely, not the hatch itself, but what opens up under it - alas, the Z7 "eats" only XQD cards without the possibility of backup to SD. Main advantages:

The image quality is definitely at the top level, plus optics with aperture ratio of 0.95 have already been announced for this bayonet (!!!). Definitely a must have. |
From a brief review of the best cameras it can be seen that the Nikon is clearly not going to give up its position in the market. However, if Canon can be considered a strong generalist, then Nikon is clearly to the mirror technology - in the segment of amateur compacts and ultrazoom, they are clearly losing to competitors. At the same time, budgetary SLRs are able to compete on equal terms with any counterparts from other Japanese firms, so the answer to the question “what to buy is Nikon or a camera from another well-known company?” Rather depends on preferences in optics (although nothing prevents an adapter from one bayonet to another).
The mirrorless segment with interchangeable optics "Nikon", alas, is actually missed - the choice is very small, and competitors are not asleep. This is especially the case of Sony and Fujifilm - their cameras are not only richer in stock, but also flaunt the regalia of international awards. But if you need a camera for extreme conditions, Nikon will successfully regain the losses in other nominations.
