Top 10 helmets
Only those who have never fallen can deny the need for protection while riding a motorcycle. Moreover, if the "asphalt disease" will pass, broken arms and legs will heal, then an unsuccessful header may be the last for the "asphalt hero." Well, since the author lost friends and acquaintances, and he himself doesn’t have much health on the same occasion, let’s at least try today to do without traditional pranksters and try to figure out how to keep our head safer on our shoulders, without losing in comfort.
Fortunately, the choice of good helmets is now bigger than in the good old days, when one and a half models of helmets available in stores differed in essence only in colors. And, although in terms of strength and degree of protection it is difficult to argue with the “integral” (unless you want for off-road driving, you don’t want to take a cross helmet), there are more comfortable helmets for sale. The main thing is that comfort does not have to be paid with an unsuccessful design, and not everyone can afford to overpay.

The best helmets integrals
Icon Airframe Pro Construct
32 130
Icon traditionally adheres to a deliberately brutal style, but without sacrificing quality. With the Airframe Pro Construct, the helmet meets the requirements of the DOT FMVSS 218 (USA), ECE 22-05 (Europe) and PSC (Japan) standards, its composite “shell” is as strong as possible, and the internal “stuffing” with a special anti-bacterial coating effectively extinguishes and distributes impact energy. As for ventilation, nine channels allow you to adjust the helmet to any conditions - the benefit and the visor is made non-sweaty.
By the way, about the visor: thanks to the Rapid release system, you can replace it with just one hand movement - for example, take it off for evening daytime rides with darkened glass and put a regular one. At the same time, it is equipped with a robust locking mechanism in the selected position, which is maintained even in spite of the strong air pressure. The "stuffing" of the helmet is modular, consisting of five elements. In total, there are 27 possible various combinations of the internal device, that is, the helmet can be perfectly adapted to almost any head. In combination with low weight, this allows the helmet to be as comfortable as possible. It is designed primarily for the "shrimp" landing of owners of sports motorcycles. Therefore, the rear part was designed with the expectation of a large deviation of the neck, but no one would hurt to take a closer fit to the classical one. Main advantages:

The helmet is as comfortable as possible for the integral, even in the distant. Expensive but worth it. |
HJC i 70
13 700
One of the most popular motorcycle helmets of the middle price segment. Of course, this is no longer a composite “hand-made”, like Icon, but at the same time the price is much more affordable - at the same time polycarbonate also provides more than decent durability. In addition, there is no need to change the visors in the "day-night" mode - traditionally, the HJC embeds descending darkened "glasses" into the helmet, which can be released or removed with one hand movement, leaving the transparent visor "on a permanent basis". The thing is actually very convenient, which is why the author, by the way, at one time preferred the helmet of this particular brand.
As for the design, you can also not worry - the company offers as many as 24 colors, from simple (yellow, white) to multi-color with a complex pattern structure. So there is an option for almost every taste. The lining, although devoid of modularity, is easily removed for washing, the material from it is “correct” - with good moisture absorption, antibacterial impregnation. Aerodynamics of the helmet does not cause the desire to beat them on the asphalt for a long time - there is practically no noise, even if you fully open all the ventilation ducts. So, despite the "yellow" origin (the company itself is Korean, the production is located in Korea, Vietnam and China), the helmet came out more than deserving of both the purchase and the place in our rating. The ratio of price and quality is quite on the level, the helmet is very convenient for me personally. |
Caberg ego
5 010
Our rating of the best motorcycle helmets is continued by the budget polycarbonate “integral” of the tourist class. The helmet is certified to ECE 22.05 P, so that its safety should not be doubted. As there is no doubt in the effectiveness of ventilation - this line of helmets is unique in the opening top “window” with an area as much as 60 square centimeters. Moreover, even when this “hatch” (indeed, the device is very similar to car hatches) is closed, the helmet parades its perforated “stuffing” through transparent plastic: they say, look what I can do! True, the author personally, this trick of designers causes more thoughts about craniotomy, pah-pah-pah.
Like HJC, Caberg has a built-in solar glass, and it can be lowered and retracted only with the left hand (in the HJC, the slider is in the middle, so you can use any hand). The “stuffing” is comfortable (including in the heat), but in terms of the noise level the helmet let us down - at the speed it starts to noticeably “sing” with different voices. However, the helmet did not count on sportbikes - but when driving without trying to show the speed record of a particular area, it is quite convenient. Well, and the price of it at all by now is more than pleasant. Main advantages:

Top modular helmets
Shoei neotec ii
38 490
The helmet presented for the last season is a development (alas, it has risen in price) of the well-known premium Neotec helmet. Well, that summer they already had time to test it in practice, and let's say at once - this tourist modular is definitely worthy of the first place in the ranking of the best helmets for a motorcycle.
Compared with the first generation significantly improved aerodynamics, the helmet became quieter and more comfortable at high speeds. His insides are designed specifically for the installation of the Sena SRL motor-headset: now you do not have to face the pressure on your ears, as is the case with helmets, where you didn’t recall headsets during design. Also in the helmet improved fixation of the "jaw" in the raised position. "Shell" - from a complex five-layer composite. As a result, the helmet is little inferior to integrals as a result, although it inevitably became heavier. The embedded tinted glass that is being lowered is, by modern standards, already a “masthead” for a tourist modular. In general, you can safely get ready for the road - although with our roads a cross helmet is often more relevant ... Main advantages:

I am familiar with the first neotek firsthand, but for this season I decided to take the second one - definitely more comfortable, especially at speeds. |
Shark Evo-One 2
27 000
Another fresh update from the famous series, this time from Shark. The new Evo-One has retained a very specific kinematics of the “jaw” movement, which does not rise up, but retracts behind the helmet, actually turning it into a full-fledged open helmet. It does not “sail”, so the Evo-One 2 is exactly as a modular that is definitely more convenient than most. True, the structure of the "shell" is no longer based on composite, the helmet is molded from thermoplastic. Of course, this had a positive effect on weight and price, but he was not expected to argue on “indestructibility” with top-end carbon helmets. Although the visor glass here does not have a direct kinematic connection with the “jaw”, a convenient opportunity has been implemented: the visor can rise and fall as the “jaw” moves. With a raised visor, eye protection is preserved - the helmet is equipped with a descending sunscreen of an increased size, leaving no light “slits” along the edges of the visual field. The best touring helmet for this money - the jaw reclines not only for a drink, for a smoke, but also for driving. |
HJC IS-MAX II
11 400
The classic “flip-up” with a rising jaw from HJC is made combined - only the “jaw” is made of polycarbonate, the “shell” itself is made of fiberglass. The helmet came out strong, though heavy (1.7 kg). The weight issue needs to be taken into account if you are planning to choose a helmet for long trips: of course, if your neck calmly carries out even the OMON "Sphere", then the extra 200-300 grams in the helmet will not be an obstacle, but someone will definitely get discomfort.
Ventilation in the helmet is also specific - if you are accustomed to lie down on the tank, hiding behind a windscreen, then consider that it is not: the ventilation only works if there is enough air pressure running onto the helmet. In general, the option, although not bad at current prices, but requiring touch and try on, as they say. Main advantages:

Top Cross-Helmet
Airoh Aviator 2.2
27 990
An Italian manufacturer can be justly proud of the list of awards that athletes won exactly in their gear. "Aviator" in version 2.2 flaunts a light and extremely durable "shell" of several layers of carbon and Kevlar, laid and glued by hand. Compared to the previous generation, the review in the peripheral area has been improved, the chin structure has been reworked, and aerodynamics have been improved. At the same time the helmet weighs less than a kilogram!
But it is designed not only for professional cross-countries. It is not without reason that the mount for the action camera is immediately included in the package: you do not need to “collective-farm” anything, risking losing your GoPro at the most interesting moment of the trip. The helmet is well ventilated, and even if you find a categorical road at the height of the July heat and wade through it at a speed of a couple of hundred meters per hour, at least your head will not experience discomfort. The verdict will be simple and we expect: in terms of price-quality ratio, we definitely give this bike helmet the first place in the ranking. Main advantages:

Never disappointed in the purchase - from competitions to pokatushek. |
Shoei vfx-wr
55 270
According to the manufacturer, it takes almost a week to manufacture each such helmet, and with a large amount of manual labor: it’s not for nothing that he doesn’t call the price democratic. The complex form of the "shell" is a combination of material and aerodynamics in a recognizable style, the helmet is comfortable at all speeds.
The aluminum jaw “jaw” provides the rider with normal breathing, reliably protecting against all the “surprises” that are inevitable on the cross-country track. At the same time she understands for cleaning simply and quickly. Helmet pads in the jaw area have the ability to "emergency removal" - just pull the red tape, then the helmet is removed elementary, even if its owner has lost consciousness and there is a risk of neck damage when it is better to avoid unnecessary movements of the head. In general, the helmet fully complies with the declared class - it is fully ready for professional participation in motocross competitions, it will not save even in heavy enduro-raids. But because of the price, which is twice the price of the Airoh, we cannot give this bike helmet the first place: it is twice as expensive, but by no means twice as good. Main advantages:

Airoh twist
10 000
The Airoh entry-level helmet is molded from thermoplastic and weighs just over a kilogram. As a “starting option,” it is quite good: it sits comfortably, is durable, it is effectively ventilated and has the same broad view as the more expensive top models.
The inner hypoallergenic lining can be easily removed and cleaned, its ventilation is at an excellent level - in the heat you can not be afraid of the fact that “the brains will boil”. We especially note the quality of ventilation in the "chin", and the filtration system is easily disassembled and cleaned. Clasp buckle - on two aluminum D-rings, the helmet is securely held in its place during drops and bumps. "Stuffing" well softens shock loads, in this regard, we also have no complaints. Top open motorcycle helmets
Shoei j-cruise
25 000
Replacing the popular J-Wing, J-Cruise came to the court of many three-quarter lovers. Multi-layer composite "shell" is durable, and at the same time the helmet is not so heavy as it may seem when looking at the massive externally "shell", and even having a built-in sun visor.
The main visor has excellent aerodynamics: even at high speeds, “blowing” and the noise of the air are minimal, it’s hard to believe that the head is not integral. The design of the helmet is calm, without catchy kitsch, so these helmets can be seen on the owners of blinding eyes with chrome cruisers, although they usually strive for minimalism when choosing a helmet (and ten years ago it was considered more serious to wear dressing). To find fault with the quality and convenience of the J-Cruise helmet is difficult: whatever one may say, but Shoei do not eat their bread for nothing. Is that the price they have traditionally high. I bought it when I went to the Sibiha - as a result, the helmet lived for Pan European, and I don’t want to change anything. |
Which motorcycle helmet is better to choose?
We begin not with the form, not with the brand and not with the price. The helmet is primarily needed for safety, and therefore, at least should have European certification ECE 22.05. If only American DOT is affixed, then this option is not the best - the standard of testing in the United States is a year older than the author of the article and thoroughly outdated, even in the States themselves, sports helmets for use in competitions are allowed only with a European certificate, as more stringent under the terms of receipt. Well, if the helmet has no certification at all, then you know - you could even see how the “shell” disperses in half, just falling from the height of the steering wheel.
And now let's move on to the format:
Fully closed integrals, of course, they provide the highest level of protection with the minimum weight - whatever one may say, and their structure is monolithic. But it will have to pay for it and a decrease in the review (in the city does not have the best effect on security), an increased risk of glass fogging.
Open helmetson the contrary, they are comfortable both in blowing and in the review, and they weigh less. But you know, it’s completely undesirable to fly into the face somewhere.
ModularLet it be harder and more expensive, it will become most convenient: it is not for nothing that touring helmets are becoming more and more often of this type. Here you can either quickly raise the "jaw" - for example, to drink / eat / smoke at the bus stop, or the helmet turns into an open one at all - the "jaw" is either retracted or removed. If the "jaw" is raised, it becomes very important aerodynamics - not every modular is normally suitable for driving with a raised "jaw" without a developed windscreen on the motorcycle itself.
Cross helmets - this is “a thing in itself”, they are designed for very specific conditions. And they will not be suitable for asphalt (at high speeds, a developed protective visor will turn into a sail), and you will not climb into the dirt in a modular or integral. So, playing in their own segment, they simply do not have competitive structures. Bought a "hard" enduro or a full-fledged sneaker? There is no choice: only a cross helmet and cross points to it.
Mandatory attribute of high-quality helmets - Easily removable for cleaning "filling" with advanced ventilation. Bactericidal impregnation will only benefit her - the material collects sweat from the skin and grease from the hair, and then, you know, the helmet can begin to smell. The visor must have a reliable fixation in intermediate positions and be able to be replaced: but, naturally, the spare visors themselves must be commercially available.
Pay attention to the customizability and efficiency of ventilation: for example, the popular low-cost Airoh J-106 had a very serious miscalculation in the design, the ventilation in the “jaw” did not overlap in principle, and in the spring and autumn it literally reduced teeth at a speed. You should not contact with too narrow ventilation channels, if you have developed a windscreen on a motorcycle: such helmets need a good flow of incoming air.
