The peoples of the North have long adapted dogs for this purpose. But the idea of using the motor instead of dogs always disturbed the human mind. So motorcycle towers were born, or motorcycle dogs. Undoubtedly, there are more comfortable and high-speed snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, but unlike them, motorcycle tires are much cheaper, more versatile, maneuverable, unpretentious in operation, have a much smaller weight and size, while the cargo can drag a lot. The simplicity of the design determines the reliability and durability of the motorcycle scraper, even in severe weather conditions.
The homeland of motorcycle towers, as well as snowmobiles of modern layout, is Canada, where large spaces and a very close climate to ours unwittingly contributed to the mechanization of winter movement. However, if modern snowmobiles, and in terms of complexity and comfort, have stepped far forward, then motor-towing vehicles remain very simple constructively, but also cheap devices.
Even the first models that went beyond the framework of complete amateurism (Hus Ski Snow Traveler, Bolens Hus Ski) laid the layout that was still in use: a simple gasoline engine from a generator, centrifugal clutch and a wide caterpillar. By the way, the roots of the term "motodog" are from the same place: the very name Hus Ski simultaneously refers to the ski ride and to the famous dog breed. In our country, motorcycle towers for a long time were built only by garage masters according to drawings from the Model Designer, but now there are enough factory models on the market. True, often these “plants” are slightly older workshops of the same handicraftsmen, but the maximum unification with the available components is only a plus: the engine is usually another clone of the classic Honda GX, a lot of spare parts are from the good old Buran and so on.
A huge plus motodog not even in their cheapness or lack of need for rights (from the point of view of the law, they are the same motoblocks). The main thing is low specific ground pressure and almost universal use of the roller suspension instead of sklizy: a good motor-towing vehicle can work not only in the winter as an ersatz snowmobile, but also serve as a swamp vehicle all the rest of the time, calmly overcome sand and clay. Without a load, the motor-dog is able to quickly take it to its destination, without saving it later with the loaded drag line. A simple casing covering the variator from the snow is equipped with “quick access” pockets - you can not remove it for maintenance or minor repairs. In total, we have a decent "rogue" at a reasonable price. Modification with skizlivoy suspension is also available, which is atypical for motodogs - however, if you often have to go by the slush (snowy-water porridge), this solution will be more suitable, because unlike rollers, the slides work perfectly in such conditions. Which motorcycle tow is better to choose?
By and large, all the models on sale are variations on one theme, and it is difficult to come up with something unusual in this layout. Therefore, when deciding which motorcycle towing vehicle is better to buy, proceed mainly from the design features:
- Engine power for the motor-towing vehicle, there will be no excess If simple models for 6-7 horsepower unwittingly force the phrase “three hours of boredom to be born in the mind, and we are fishing”, then the more powerful are not just faster, but often are not used at all for their original purpose: as a pusher for skiers, like mini - snowmobile, and in general a person is able to adapt almost everything to an entertainment ride. Of the manufacturers of motors, single-minded favorites are Lifan and Zongshen (they are, in fact, the leaders in the production of engines of such a plan in China as a whole). Honda is more expensive, not so much and surpassing the resource own clones from China.
- Options transmissions a bit: on low-power, low-cost models, this is the usual centrifugal clutch (sometimes called “automatic transmission” by sellers, but this is not the same thing), but the variable-speed models are much more practical, especially with the Safari variators already well known for snowmobiles. Without losing in toughness (and often winning in it due to the possibility of using a chain gearbox with a large gear ratio), such motorcycle dogs get plus to cruising speed, and most importantly, they do not burn the grip when driving.
- From the point of universality, the track suspension is better than the roller one, but the slides are “sharpened” under loose or wet snow, which serves as a lubricant. Only if you often have to drive in such conditions, you should think about a motorcycle on sklizah - but you will not be able to ride it in any other season. The “Mukhtar 15” construction is ideal in this respect, where the suspension can be rebuilt into three bills for current needs.
- How wide should the caterpillar be? In fact, the way it will be easy to buy later. Do not forget about the load that determines the "catch": a light low-power motor-dog wide “five hundred” will not give real advantages when driving in the winter, but in the “swamp” version it will be just irreplaceable because of the minimal pressure on the ground.
- Front or rear wheel drive? Again, it depends on how the motocoover will be used: the front-wheel drive tensioners on the upper branch of the track, leaving the lower (working) side relaxed, and on unevenness it wears much less, and the hook is better (not for nothing this option is called “tank”). On the loose snow, rear-wheel drive is more convenient - there is no need to bend the working part of the caterpillar, and the motor, pulling it precisely, provides the best throughput without the tendency to dig in.
