6 best hunting knife manufacturers
If there is a thing that is sure to be useful to the hunter, even if he did not get anything, then this is ... Who said "flask"? In fact, it is, of course, a good hunting knife. And, speaking of hunting knives, we cover not only the meaning of the term that is given by our legislation (in it the “hunting knife” is a cold weapon acquired only with a valid permit from the POX series for firearms). There are so many loopholes in domestic standards, which allow to distinguish "cold weapons" from "hozbyt", that a knife of any format can be tailored to your needs, without going beyond the "household" framework. Therefore, there are so many knives with certificates of “household” on our shelves that we could not make a rating of the best hunting knives by model.
Let's make it easier - we point out those firms that, in our opinion, deserve the most attention when choosing. The benefit of Russia in this regard is something to be proud of - we have whole cities of gunsmiths, and the words "Kizlyar", "Chrysostom", "Vorsma" and so on for lovers of knives have become not only geographical concepts. Alas, the limited format of the article will not allow to write about very many manufacturers, so we first of all recall the products of the most common and suitable for the role of the working tool of the hunter.

AIR, Chrysostom
Since its founding in 1999, AiR (Arkhipov and Rogozin) has actually become the “face” of its city, although it is not deprived of craftsmen: cold weapons have been massively produced in Zlatoust for more than 200 years, and experts from Zolingen have helped the industry to develop. The assortment of knives "AiR" a huge number of mass models - from harmless kitchen (hmm ... although according to police statistics you can not say so) to serious models that are certified as cold steel. We don’t even speak about “overgrown knives” (kukri, machete) and even more so with sabers: there is something to choose from, let alone special orders. Almost every model of the knife can be produced in several versions - you can choose the material of the handle and the steel of the blade, and the choice of steel will precisely make the Nozheleman smash his head. From a simple 95x18, very popular for making inexpensive tourist and hunting knives, you can go to AUS-8, Elmax ... But if high-chromium steels, even practical ones, do not suit you aesthetically, what can be compared with Damascus? Yes, it is, of course, difficult to clean because of the relief surface, and because of this it quickly rusts, but at least the last Zlatoust masters are successfully fighting: customers are offered a special weather-resistant Damascus Zladinox ZDI-1016, created by the masters of the company. What else can I say? We will simply list only a small part of the awards already won by the company: the first places won repeatedly in the nominations of the international exhibition Blade - Traditions and Modernity, Blade of the Year on the Nuremberg IWA-2009. While he was able to limit himself to only three knives, the latter ordered from a Damascus: he really feels good in moisture, he was convinced on the hunt several times, although the experience with Damascus of other firms was sadder. |
Vorsma Knife LLC, Vorsma
The ten thousandth town of Vorsma, by renown, can argue with many millionaires: here, since the 18th century, workshops for the production of various blades have been concentrated, and the traditions of handicraftsmen are still alive: speaking of knives from Vorsma, we are talking primarily about small private workshops. Although it cannot be said that the firm of A. Sedov (not to be confused with S. Sedov, who also lives in Worm ... and guess what he does?) Is so small - even if there are few employees in it, but the fruits of their labors are well known. The production is based on the basic knife design system, and the client can choose the blade material and handle design that interests him - for example, if you like the Leader hunting knife, then you need to give 14,500 rubles for a damask blade and figure casting from nickel silver: a knife D2 steel (4900 r.), Damascus (4050 r.) would be an excellent working variant. Well, in any case, you can choose the handle to your taste. If desired, nickel-silver casting for the design of the handle can be bought from the masters and separately, in order to “elevate” the previously bought knife or home-made product. The choice of steels for this workshop is one of the best: they work with “diamond” steel XB5, with damask, and with several types of Damascus. Fans of foreign steels will be met in the catalog by acquaintances Elmax, S390, M390, AISI. So the possibility of choosing a knife "by itself" is very great, although it is a question of a set of standard designs. Main advantages:

I ordered it as a gift, but I think I will buy the same for myself - the workmanship is very high, the knife is just great. |
OOO PP Kizlyar, Kizlyar
The Dagestan blades are the “brand” of tsarist times, and the modern production of knives in Kizlyar (not to be confused with the Kizlyar Supreme brand, these are different companies) successfully combines tradition with modern fashion: you can choose from the catalog companies and classic Caucasian daggers with silver trim and tactical knives of imported steel. At the same time, the prices of Kizlyar blades are quite low-cost, if you do not aim at exclusive models with expensive finishes. That is why, among the lovers of knives, the word "Kizlyar" has become a household name: someone sees in it good-quality "working" blades without any frills, someone contemptuously twists his lip - they say, mass stamping. However, Kizlyar knives are not only mass “Cranes”, “KO-1”, “Kites” or “Bikers”, but also original works for “very different money” (“Isma”, “Caspiy”, “Leopard” ). Alas, it was precisely the mass character that once served the company in a bad way - the term “Kozlyar”, which appeared due to numerous flaws in gross budget products and an indifferent attitude of the customer to customer reviews, was even established on the Nozheman forums. Some of the problems, of course, were more aesthetic than actually affecting the use of the knife (for example, the asymmetry of the descents, which the author also has on Pavlovsky Hunter-2, which does not prevent this knife from working for 8 years), already required a close selection of a good hunting knife when buying. Anyway, Kizlyar knives remain one of the most common, so there will be no problems with the choice, and the reviews of recent years on specialized forums are much more favorable than the words addressed to PP Kizlyar LLC ten years ago. Now the company already offers a lifetime warranty on factory defects of mass models. If you need a good working hunting knife, and not a beautiful “shelf” for the collection - then why not? Good hunting knives for little money. You know, hunting is measured at the price of a knife even more stupid than the price of a gun - and then, while you are describing, for how much your “Beretta” took, your neighbor with his grandfather's “tulk” would pass ... Did you understand the hint? |
Forge Semina Yu.M, Vorsma
Let's continue about the masters of the Nizhny Novgorod region: Yuri Semin began his work in 1995, and now this master can already be recognized as famous throughout Russia and beyond. In 2016, Semin’s knives could be introduced at the 21st (!) Exhibition, which ran from Moscow to Irkutsk. And, what is there to conceal, the fact of acquiring a knife of a particular master, and not the faceless brand of any company, can also become an argument when choosing: manual work will always be appreciated. What does the master offer us today? There are many interesting things in the standard series. For example, practical “folds” can be ordered with damask blades, which not so many companies offer. Close to the prices for Damascus knives made of steel D2 - one of the most popular overseas "semi-november" (chrome content - 12%). Do you like big knives? Then it is worth looking in the direction of models like “Kazak” (224 mm of the blade), “Pharaoh” (247 mm), “Caesar” (246 mm). Well, do not forget about the machete. He makes wizards and axes, and even a stone (!) Ax is offered to lovers of “full exclusives”. What first comes to mind by association to the word "Damascus"? Of course, damask - blacksmith works with this steel, and offers blades of crucible damask and alloyed. The price of them, alas, many times more than that of any other options from the "simpler" steel, and they are made by the master only for prepayment. Main advantages:

Knives are fairly inexpensive, while well assembled and sharpened. The steel is properly hardened, it does not crumble, but it does not constantly need sharpening. |
The best foreign manufacturers of hunting knives
Helle
Among the connoisseurs of high-quality classic knives, the Norwegian company, founded in 1932, is well-known, and not only because of difficult-to-pronounce names: their quality is undeniable, and the strict appearance of the Scandinavian knife perfectly combines with modern materials. At the time of the start of production, knives were forged by hand in the family forge, in a village where there was not even electricity, and the company entered the market ... or rather, rode a bicycle, which one of the founding brothers plunged with a full backpack of knives and went to Oslo . Since then, much has changed in the workshop, but to this day the essence of production has not changed: the Helle knives are forged and assembled only by hand, and they are very popular among European hunters. And in Russia, even despite the very noticeably increased prices, the company has enough fans. And it cannot be denied that the design, “run-in” by generations of anglers and hunters, works great. In the production of blades, the sandwich structure or laminated steel is used - the central part is made of high carbon steel, which gives the knife sharpening resistance. But, in order to exclude fast rusting and the probability of fracture (hardened “high carbon” is very fragile), the outer parts are already made of high-chromium stainless steel. Therefore, any person who happened to own a Helle knife knows perfectly well how well these knives keep sharpening and are not afraid of moisture - and this is very important for a hunter, especially when it comes to the largest game of waterfowl in our country. The best hunting knife that I had to use is Helle Jaktkniv, definitely. |
Mora of Sweden
Another representative of Scandinavia, moreover, counting history from the 19th century: although the Mora brand itself appeared not so long ago, since the merger of the firms KJ Eriksson and Frost Knivfabrik in 2005, they both started production a long time ago. Eric Frost knives began to be produced in 1891, and Krang-Johan Eriksson made knives since 1912, so Mora is the union of two of the oldest and largest Swedish factories for the production of knives. As befits a true Scandinavian, Mora knives perfectly combine accessibility, practicality and quality. The price in Russia for products under this brand starts from three-digit ones: knives such as Morakniv Classic 611 cost less than 1000 rubles, and for this money you get really high-quality assembled knife with a blade made of durable carbon steel. Well, in the more expensive series, either Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel or “laminate” are used. In short, if you are looking for a perfect embodiment of the concept of a working knife, which is inexpensive, practical and reliable, then the circle of fans of Mora knives will surely accept you. The best working knife is a combination of Scandinavian quality with a very budget price. It works great on hunting and hiking, it’s not a shame to break or drown it, like an expensive shtachnik. |
What is the best steel for a hunting knife?
Hunting is a paradoxical occupation. Here, the age-old classic is perfectly combined with modernity, and practicality - with the delights of art. On the hunt, you can see the old Tula kurkovka, and the new semi-automatic, a budget rifle in black plastic and a piece, whose price is comparable to the cost of the apartment. So the knives are used here are very different: someone will choose a simple externally knife without thread and engravings, someone in the sheath will carry an exclusive handmade.
Therefore, we dwell on what is inside - on the materials. Their choice of knives is great, each has its own pros and cons.
Perhaps the most democratic option is carbon steel: they are inexpensive, easy to heat treat, durable, keep sharpening well. Adding chrome to the alloy, we reliably protect the knife from the harmful effects of moisture. Here one of the best budget alloys is 95x18 and its American counterparts 440D / 440C. They are well kept sharpening, durable, because very popular.
On sale you can meet and knives from tool steelsoriginally developed for cutting tools (drills, taps, dies). Their plus is the ability to get high hardness, but that is why they are sensitive to heat treatment modes: with an error, it is easy to get a hot knife that crumbles quickly along the edge, and it will be very difficult to sharpen manually. When bending, such a knife will break at all. And, finally, the corrosion resistance of the developers of tool steels was not particularly worried - but the rust on the knife was inappropriate. On the hunt or fishing such a knife should not be taken.
For the same reason Damascus and bulat, despite the romantic flair around these words, also have certain disadvantages.Care they need careful, because because of the relief surface of the water is easier to penetrate into microcracks. Cheap damask, poorly forged, can quickly begin to crack and crumble. On the other hand, modern metallurgy allowed the creation of Damascus, not subject to rust, and even to produce such steel industrially - for example, the Swedish Damasteel: one of its grades is designed for the manufacture of firearms, and there the requirements for alloy strength are much higher than in knives. And from damaging the cutting edge, Damascus laminated is well insured - such knives are cut by a homogeneous plate of high carbon steel, and damask “overlays” serve only aesthetic purposes.
