12 best computer power supplies
Often, when assembling or upgrading a PC, little attention is paid to choosing a good power supply unit, at best having estimated the approximate power consumption and having bought a power supply unit a little more powerful - in theory, this should be enough. In practice, this approach does not justify itself: a cheap power supply with low efficiency, operating under load, begins to overheat, including the fan at maximum speed. And, if noise can still be tolerated (although not necessary), then during long-term operation in this mode, the power supply unit may trivially break - and it’s good if it just takes off one of the power lines, if, say, it’s going to power an expensive processor increased voltage that VRM can't handle ...
So is it worth saving a couple of thousand, risking parting with several tens of thousands? We present the ranking of the best (according to experts and ordinary customers) popular in late 2018 - early 2019 computer power supplies.

The best budget power supplies up to 500 watts

One of the best and most common power supplies is cheaper than 3000 rubles, and at the same time having a "bronze" certificate 80 Plus. Expected circuitry here is simpler than that of the "gold" and especially the "titanium" blocks, but this has little effect on the work in reality. Of course, it will be heated quite noticeably under high loads - and hence the increased fan noise. The partly compact radiators of transistors and converter diodes are also to blame for this - even in blocks with “gold” they are larger, although there is more efficiency (and, therefore, less heating). The fan, by the way, is typically dipkulovsky - a transparent “hundred-twelve” with blue backlight. Do you need her? However, it also has practical benefits - if you have to climb into the system unit in the dark, and the power supply is located on top, you can do without a flashlight. I am glad about the declared support for the power of video cards operating in SLI or CrossFire mode - not every budget power supply will pull out such a load on a 12-volt line without floating voltage on the others. However, the claimed 500 watts are not entirely honest here - the 12-volt line draws a maximum of 456 watts. Main advantages:

Inexpensive power supply, but surely pulls a bunch of i5 and GTX 1060. In addition, there are all the necessary protection, and even an active PFC - and this is for quite budget money. |
While in the budget segment most power supply models still chew on old schemes with group stabilization of the adoption times of the ATX standard, Xilence successfully brings to market an inexpensive Performance A + line based on modern HEC architecture with a single 12 V channel and individual DCs -DC converters for 5 and 3.3 volts. As a result, these blocks hold the voltage perfectly even with a strong bias in the direction of 12 volts, which is critical for group stabilization: during the development of such schemes, no one thought that it would be necessary to supply more power to processors and video cards on a 12-volt line. The division of models by power in this line is a bit strange, so we decided to include not the youngest 430-watt model, but a more powerful 530-watt model in the best block absorption rating of up to 500 watts.Let the power and just above the set threshold, it is better to let it be a little extra watts as a reserve. This power supply has no removable cables, and the braid is only on the 24-pin connector harness: well, the manufacturer decided to focus on the stuffing, and not on the "beautiful". And the block came out worthy: “honest” certification of 80+ Bronze, confirmed on the Plug Load Solutions website (by the way, pay attention - the 630 W model is not much more expensive, but already has an official certificate of 80+ Silver according to this site), having all the necessary protections and active PFC. Two 6 + 2 connectors for powering video cards, 6 SATA and 3 "Molex" - the most versatile set, and the cable length is sufficient for midi-towers with a lower BP setting. On the 12 V line, the maximum current load is 44 A, that is, we have an “honest” 528 watts. Main advantages:

An excellent block with good efficiency and high-quality stabilization of noise, for example, the built-in ALC887 now gives noticeably less than with the old one. |

The power supply, as they say, is not wise - simple circuitry with group stabilization along the +12 and +5 lines (that is, with sensitivity to distortions in energy consumption), not a particularly resourceful 120-mm fan, simple accessories like Junfu capacitors ... But, anyway , on the case there is a marking of 80+ Bronze, and a 12-volt line can give up to 360 watts of power. If the system is assembled without claims for overclocking achievements or desired by all schoolchildren of the country "ultras in 4K", then this is quite enough. BP cables are fixed, but braided. The reserve is good in length, especially for the main SATA- “tail” with 4 connectors, the closest one is at a distance of 550 mm from the unit, and the furthest one is already a meter away! Two more SATA connectors (both at a distance of 350 mm) are installed on cables terminating as ancient as Lenin's mummy with the FDD power connector (do you still remember the interpretation of this abbreviation?) And "Molex", respectively. In total, there are three “molexes” on two cables. There is also a cable for additional video card power. Although the power supply of the power supply is small, due to the limited efficiency, it gives a maximum load of 90 W to global warming under maximum load. So the fan, forced to cool the radiators, comes to noticeable rumors after the bar has crossed the 200 W total load, and with the maximum power consumption of the system, its decibels are not comfortable in silence. Another budget for the price of power supply, but still bronze. I think the fan will somehow change it when it starts to make more noise, but so far the hands do not reach. |
The power supply units from the FSP Group have one serious drawback - a high noise level under load. But you forget about this shortcoming after you look at the price tag. If you are building a low-end budget computer, the FSP Group ATX-500PNR is the best choice! This unit is guaranteed to work without any complaints for three or four years. However, it is not very noisy, if there is no high load. Available connectors are enough to connect a large number of components. Problems can arise only among those people who have assembled a set of hard drives, a couple of video cards and a sound card in a computer case. But such a power supply will not help them, since in this case a higher power is required. Main advantages:

Top power supplies up to 500 watts
If we are talking about a small power consumption by today's standards, then involuntarily come to mind thoughts about building a low-noise PC or completely silent PC: we put a passive tower cooler, instead of the usual hard drives - SSD ... Well, what about the power supply fan? And hell! The 400-watt power supply for the computer from Sea Sonic is undoubtedly good both outside and inside: all cables are unfastened and have braids, board assembly, perfectly visible through the developed housing perforation, causes no complaints, well, 80+ Gold certificate and active PFC uniquely determine the high class of the block. An amusing nuance, if we continue with the appearance, is that inside the carton a second package is hidden, a cloth bag. A set of connectors (note that with gold-plated contacts!) Is more than enough to assemble a computer — only SATA connectors of 5 pieces, even though the raid is assembled. "Molex" the same, there is also an additional power connector for video cards. Do I need it at 400 W? Well, why not, if we consider that the maximum power on the 12 V line is 396 W - consider almost the nominal power of the entire unit. However, passive cooling has a serious disadvantage. Is the power supply installed in the top of your computer? You will have to change it, because the Fanless X-400 can only be installed in a strictly defined position, and the upper ventilation openings should not be blocked. By the organization of air flow in the case, too, should be approached carefully. To summarize: a good power supply, which is undoubtedly worth its money and the quality of performance, and opportunities, and reliability. For a "quiet" PC, it will be an excellent choice. Well, the minimum level of output voltage ripple is uniquely written down into pluses for owners of built-in audio cards who are tired of “bzzzz” in the speakers. Main advantages:

There is no noise, the declared power gives out without problems. Chic unit, class felt in every detail. |
Unit with partially modular cables: you can disconnect everything except 24-pin. Indeed, why should one shoot him? Well, the rest (video card power, peripherals) can already be connected on demand. The total power of the four “virtual” 12 volt lines is 480 W, that is, the ratio to the total power was 0.96. An excellent indicator, and also stated and confirmed by Plug Load Solutions, compliance with the standard 80+ Gold. The operating voltage range at the input is from 100 to 240 V. Inside the unit is made according to the most current scheme with DC-DC converters. As a result, we get excellent voltage stability on a 12-volt line (deviations - no more than 2%, and in a big way), while lines 5/3. 3 do not “float”, fully fitting the requirements of the ATX standard. With a load of up to 350 W, the power supply is absolutely silent - and given the fact that the current generation of video cards are quite economical, this makes it possible to rely on the fact that during games at maximum settings not the PSU will become the loudest node of the system. The temperature of the electrolytic capacitors keeps within the norm even after long-term operation at full power, which allows you to count on a good resource. Main advantages:

A good unit at a reasonable price, quality cables, voltage holds clearly. Noise? Generally forgot what it is, the fan is quiet, the throttles are not ringing. |

A compact SFX power supply unit will become primarily interesting for small-sized assemblies, where savings on overall dimensions can already give a plus to proper organization of air flow and cable management. At the same time, he is not deprived of the possibilities and quality - after all, and the certificate is 80+ Gold and a seven-year warranty from the manufacturer. Opening the package, we find the cloth bags that are traditional for the Corsairs - the unit itself is hidden in one, but the second is a set of cables (there are no fixed ones on the unit). Previously, there was a nice bonus in the form of a proprietary 32 GB flash drive, also equipped with hardware data protection, but now it’s unlikely to be lucky to find such a complete set. The seven-blade fan is not a “hundred-twelve” fan, but a 92-millimeter one. But you should not be afraid of the increased noise - the unit is quiet, the losses for heating at maximum power do not exceed 50 watts. Therefore, the high performance of the fan is not required, and only under full load it reaches a noise level of about 30 dB, and up to 350 W, it practically “whispers” 22-23 dB. And finally, "delicious" - if you calculate the maximum load on a 12-volt line, the same 450 watts will come out, as indicated on the case. That is, in virtually all the lines he can pull out and 500 W without problems, the manufacturer clearly indicated the value in the specifications with a margin (most likely, for the sake of beautiful “100%” of 12 V, marketers do not sleep). Overload protection is activated at a power of 570 watts. Main advantages:

Top stuffing, minimum noise and 80+ Gold - the best power supply for compact cases! |

Zalman's “Five Hundreds” can proudly demonstrate the “bronze” certification mark and 456 watts of power on a 12-volt line: well, you can safely load this power supply unit. Therefore, the manufacturer decided not to waste time on trifles and put as many as two additional power cables for video cards, although one can argue with that - one more powerful card will still be better than two weak ones in SLI with the same current load. Up to 5 SATA devices can be powered, and the cables are long enough for Midi-Tower cases and, possibly, can be easily extended in full-sized cases - up to 500 mm connectors closest to the SATA connector. The fan is the usual 120-millimeter noise for such units: on a heavy load, it already makes itself felt almost 50 decibels. This is not surprising, because the power supply unit consumes under heating 90 W, if you give the maximum load, and these watts need to be accelerated around the room. The minimum speed (and, accordingly, the lowest noise level) the fan keeps up to 200 W of power consumption. Main advantages:

The best power supplies up to 750 watts
In the previous version of our ranking of the best PC power supplies, the leader was Sea Titonic Prime Titanium. However, time does not stand still, and on sale it was replaced by a new version, which is expected to re-occupy the top spot without any tangible competition. Transforming from Titanium to Ultra Titanium (I wonder what the next power supply would be called?), Prime became better and (alas) more expensive. Let's go over the characteristics: since the power of the block is not at all small, even the difference between the two “titans” may already be noticeable. Well, in addition to the “titanium” certificate, the unit also received a Cybenetics ETA A certificate, which means no-load power consumption of more than 0.15 W and an efficiency of at least 91% under any load — these requirements are even stricter than are needed to get the title "Titanium". Excellent result! In addition, the block, despite the active cooling, is very quiet: one more certificate in the collection, Cybenetics Lambda A ++, is assigned only BP, the noise of which does not exceed 20 dB. At 750 W load, we emphasize! And the 135-mm fan installed here perfectly satisfies these requirements: at low load it is completely disconnected and only after 50% it starts rotating constantly (in the 30% -50% range, the hysteresis fan controls, that is, the fan is turned on only when the temperature of the radiators exceeds relative to a given threshold). Add to this the long cables of high quality with a bunch of necessary and unnecessary connectors, and SATA - 180-degree, which will facilitate installation, and 12 years warranty. Shut up and take my money! - shouts an internal Hamster, plugging into the mouth of the Toad, free from bills with its paw. Main advantages:

In the assembly with the GTX 1080 Ti does its job for five plus! Well, in comparison with the price of the card is not so expensive. |
Against the background of the leader of the ranking of the best new power supply from Corsair does not look so impressive - still "platinum", and not "titanium." But given the fact that in the 12-volt line, he can give even more by 1 amp, and costs much less, someone will forgive him more heat and noise of the fan at peak load. At lower loads, the PSU is absolutely silent - as soon as the radiators cool down, the fan shuts off completely. In terms of switching capabilities, the HX750 is clearly designed for overclocking fans - this is clearly hinted at by two 4 + 4 pin connectors to power the processor, plus to this - 4 6 + 2 connectors for video cards: you will obviously have the opportunity to turn your PC into a home heater for the winter. It's funny, but one of the removable cables still has a 3.5 ”drive power connector - I think many readers of this article do not even remember what it is. Add to this a ten-year warranty - Corsair makes a serious bid for leadership in its segment. Main advantages:

In my opinion, the best power supply with such power, the price is quite justified. Put in the server, and pulls fresh Xeon, and raid drives without any noise. |
Before entering the market, Sea Sonic PRIME Titanium confidently held the title of the quietest 750-watt power supply, and now it will be a good option to build a low-noise PC with high power consumption. The 80 Plus platinum certificate promises low heating of the power circuits, which is confirmed by the low fan speed: it is simply impossible to hear it, even with the quietest cooling of the processor and video card. The main power harness is non-removable, and even the power supply of the periphery can be assembled at will with complete harnesses. But it must be remembered that in the power supply in the out-of-box state there are four independent lines of 12-volt power supply, the maximum load on two of them is 25 A each, and two more “pull” to 30 — take this into account when configuring the wiring. In the extreme case, you can use overclocking key - in this case, all the power lines are combined, allowing you to issue all 750 watts into a bundle. To do this, you will have to take one of the slots for expansion cards on the back of the case - instead of a plug, a plate with a switch and a control LED is inserted into it, which is connected to the power supply unit with wires. This may be more convenient for someone than a switch located on the Corsair HX750, which also unites the + 12V lines. Main advantages:

The best power supplies up to 1 kW
Considering how convincing the winner was the Prime Titanium power supply in the previous rating category, we decided for justice not to include the kilowatt version with the “titanium” certificate in the top of this category. But the winner here is the power supply from Sea Sonic - yes, if you don’t need a “titanium” certificate, then you can also purchase “platinum” with significant savings. Otherwise, it is still the same fully modular power supply with a total 12-volt line, which is able to give up to 83 amps. Considering that the cable set allows you to power six video cards and two processors that require 4 + 4-pin cables each ... Honestly, it is even difficult to imagine what tasks you can think of in order to boot a hundred percent similar computer. Main advantages:

I calmly pulled the system on the i7-7700K with two video cards - everything is heated, except for the power supply itself! |
How to choose a good power supply?
Let's start with the obvious - with power. Remember that the purchased power supply should have at least 25% of the margin of power from the peak in the system being assembled (it is not difficult to calculate it - there are many online calculators on the Internet). Taking into account the future upgrade, it is worth laying up to 50% of the stock - this will not only significantly increase energy consumption in the future, but also reduce the load on the BP, ensuring that it works in the most optimal part of the efficiency curve.
The efficiency of a pulsed power supply is non-linear — at a low load and at maximum it is lower than at an average load (around 50-60%). However, the most important for us is the efficiency at maximum load, especially when it comes to systems with high power consumption. If you build a simple PC with a 250 watt power supply, then its efficiency will not be decisive - even a cheap Chinese will be heated slightly. But at 500 W power, the difference of a few percent efficiency will already give a serious difference in heating, and this directly affects not only the noise of the power supply, but also its life, especially when the radiators and the fan impeller have time to collect dust.
We recommend considering to buy only power supplies. with 80 Plus certification, indicating that the efficiency of the power supply is above 80% (this not only promises low heat, but also directly indicates the quality of the components). There are several certification options, we give them in order of increasing efficiency: Bronze-> Silver-> Gold-> Platinum-> Titanium. And, if, with a power of 500 W, the 80 Plus Bronze unit is a perfectly balanced choice, then in the kilowatt area it’s already worth looking at “platinum” or even “titanium”.
In the list of characteristics it is necessary to pay attention to another item. This is about PFC availability - physically, the operation of this system consists in minimizing the phase shift inevitable in AC networks due to the presence of high-capacity capacitors at the input of the power supply unit. If the power supply unit without PFC has a power factor of about 70%, then active PFCs are able to bring it to almost the perfect unit - and with a load of a kilowatt it provides no less than a savings of up to 300 watts of power consumption. But do not forget that not every PFC circuit is capable of “making friends” with uninterruptible power supplies - since in a cheap UPS the form of voltage is far from an ideal sinusoid, the PFC is literally “crazy”, refusing to work.
Have a good shopping!
