Top 15 drills
The modern drill cardinally differs from that tool which our fathers and grandfathers used. This is no longer an ordinary manual brace, but a serious multifunctional tool that has a lot of technical characteristics and capabilities. The choice of the best model of the drill depends primarily on the purpose of its use:
- the type of material you will need to work with
- spheres of use (household or professional model),
- special feature requirements.
3 defining moments when choosing a drill
1. Quality
Regardless of the model and purpose of the drill, the main point that people pay attention to when choosing it is the quality of the tool. First of all, it is a good assembly and exterior finish, information on the nameplate with the abbreviation CE (means that the tool meets the requirements of the European Union) without hieroglyphs, high-quality internal content, reliable mechanics.
2. Price
You should not overpay for the functions that you will use once a year. In addition, one should not forget that, as a rule, excessive multifunctionality becomes the first sign of the low quality of any instrument.
3. Power
When choosing power, it is important that the tool does not overload the home power grid. But the principle “the more the better” does not quite work here. Everyone chooses for himself the optimal ratio of instrument power, its dimensions and weight - parameters that are directly related to each other. The household drill is offered in the power range of 250-1500 W. More powerful drills are used by construction professionals, giving them great opportunities to work.
To choose the best option, not overpaying for excess power, but at the same time and not to overload the engine with too large loads, you should pay attention to the fact that
- soft materials (wood, plaster, plastic) require power up to 500 W,
- brick or concrete when drilling with a blow - at least 600-800 W (energy is spent not only on the rotation of the drill, but also on blows),
- A hole with a diameter of 8 mm in concrete can be drilled with a 500 W drill in case of a short work.

Top unstressed drills up to 500 watts

The compact drill with a 450-watt motor is equipped with a good-quality keyless chuck and has an absolutely classic layout of controls, you will not have to get used to or once again deal with it. It’s nice that the manufacturer didn’t forget about ergonomics as well - there are clips that allow you to hang a drill on a belt, there are also sockets for four bits. Given that the motor develops torque up to 10 newton meters, the bits here are not for beauty: the drill is quite suitable for use as a screwdriver. Thanks to the pad Softgrip, the grip of the drill is very convenient. The noise level is moderate. So giving her first place in the ranking of the best drills was quite a logical step. Having transferred the production of amateur series of tools to China, Makita, of course, wins in the cost of production, but, alas, at the same time the build quality drops significantly - many buyers who choose the 6413 model note this. However, let's start by tradition with a good one. And the main thing in good is that normal rolling bearings are used here, and not cheap sleeves with which low cost drills sin. So the resource and maintainability do not cause concern. The drill has a comfortable grip and tolerable weight for a 450-watt model, it is comfortable to work with, although when used with a ladder, the belt fastening will be lacking. And now about what you need to pay attention to when buying. First of all, it is the noise of the gearbox, which can be assessed by simply holding the cartridge at low revs with your hand. Increased noise is not a sentence, but simply means “grease saved” by collectors. It is not difficult to fill the gearbox, the main thing is to unscrew all the self-tapping screws without a trace, so as not to risk a guarantee. Then pay attention to the sparking of brushes: it happens that they are from the factory badly fitted to the collector. Of course, over time, they will wear out, but it is better to take the instrument, which was initially well assembled. Main advantages:

The classic budget class for Russia is Interskol. Inexpensive (but not so much as to suspect blindness "from matches and acorns"), powerful enough (350 W), a compact and lightweight drill is popular and common in Russian stores. On the origin of the drill, given the fact that it can be found on Aliexpress, we will tactfully keep silent. Ergonomics at "Interskol" is not bad, there are rubber pads on the handle, there is a clip for hanging on the belt. Adjustment of turns traditional for this brand - a small wheel on a key. There are only three bearings: two on the rotor and one on the spindle from the chuck side, but from the opposite end of the spindle, alas, there is a sleeve. As a screwdriver, the drill is not very convenient - at low speeds it doesn’t have enough torque, and at high speeds it is already easy to lick the head of the self-tapping screw with a bat. Isn't that a punch? A solid aluminum gearbox with a side switch can really cause such suspicions. But in reality it is a rotation speed switch. And very useful - at first speed, the 850-watt motor provides up to 36 newton meters of torque. By the way, the bits do not need to be clamped in the chuck: a nest for them is provided in the spindle itself. A safety clutch is also provided that does not allow the gearbox and the engine to be overloaded when the drill or bit is jammed. The engine here has reliable dust protection, so that at the construction site this drill will find its application without fear for the resource. The reverse is carried out by turning the brush unit, therefore the switch of the direction of rotation has a characteristic location on the side. The simplicity and reliability of such a reverse is a plus, but the switch is still not very convenient. Main advantages:

If you need a good, powerful 2-speed drill, and the Metabo price seems too big, then Makita will be an interesting option. 720-watt motor through a gearbox, enclosed in a metal housing, provides good torque on the spindle. Rate it, alas, we can only feel: the manufacturer does not give exact figures. But the drill with large diameters at first speed is really confident. In general, the drill was successful - moderately heavy, sturdy, easy to use. The gearbox does not suffer from increased noise, and the grip of the handles is comfortable. Is that the side protection is not enough vibroprotection, and the idea to place the gearshift at the bottom is not optimal. Main advantages:

When working with a powerful (and therefore usually weighty) one-hand drill, it is usually not very comfortable: the engine in front of the handle outweighs and twists the brush. Well, the creators of DeWALT DWD115KS have not forgotten about this, having placed the handle just below the center of gravity, at the same time and having reduced the weight to 1.9 kg. Drill is really very convenient when working with one hand, especially since in striving for maximum compactness, it simply does not have room for the front handle. But the 700-watt motor pulls well, and the cartridge has a built-in ratchet, which does not allow it to spontaneously unwind when it is reversed. Main advantages:

A power of 1.3 kW is a serious claim for high performance, and a fully assembled gearbox in an aluminum case not only has a shock mode, but also two spindle speeds. The spindle itself, equipped with a cam chuck, also has a hex socket for bits. So Metabo and in this section ranking of the best drills deserves first place. If you look closer, you can see the atypical location of the speed controller - it, along with the Vario-Tacho-Constamatic control electronics board, is located on top of the case, and this will probably be the only complaint to ergonomics. A control indicator is located between the speed controller and the impact mode switch, which notifies of the activation of thermal protection (constant burning), re-activation blocking (frequent flashes), and also the wear of brushes (occasional flashes). For the last "reminder" it is worth saying a separate "thank you" to the manufacturer. On the speed controller there is a special pulse mode to facilitate drilling and screwing screws. The engine traditionally has dust protection, a safety coupling is provided in the gearbox. Metabo takes the issues of reliability and safety here seriously. Main advantages:

Structurally, Bosch is simpler, although all kinds of "bells and whistles" in the professional segment, this company loves no less than Metabo. The drill is equipped with a two-speed gearbox; at the first speed, the 1100-watt electric motor transmits up to 40 newton-meters to the spindle. The grip of the drill is convenient, although it is worth complaining that the front handle is simple for this class, and its vibration isolation is not the best. When working in shock mode, Metabo is more comfortable, less “itch” on the hands. A clutch is provided in the gearbox, which not only limits the torque transmitted to the chuck, but also effectively dampens “pulling out” from the hands during sharp jamming of the drill. How about something cheaper? Then let's move on to the Makita, which offers us a 720-watt percussion drill with a two-stage gearbox for quite lifting money. The assembly of this model takes place in the UK - although it’s not as good as the “native Japanese”, but compared with the Romanian and Chinese “Makitas” of the lower price range, it is definitely better. According to the device, the drill is simple, and if it is still possible to reconcile with the lack of electronic stabilization of revolutions, then the absence of a safety clutch should be taken into account: when drilling the wall, stumbling on something solid, the drill breaks from the hands. To reduce the sharpness of the breakthrough, the company's engineers used an interesting solution by installing a damper between the case and the rear handle, but in terms of efficiency, of course, it is difficult to compare it with the safety clutch. When mixing the mortar or tile glue, more power and the corresponding torque will be needed - no longer one amateur save, he burned a household drill that was burnt during the repair of an apartment. Well, to save when buying a Metabo B 32/3 just will not work: it is worth this drill mixer as weighty as it feels in your hands. But at a power of 1.8 kW, it gives up to 190 newton-meters of torque per spindle - more than, say, a “Zhiguli” engine. The reducer is applied three-stage, allowing to choose, at what maximum turns to work: 170, 320 or 470 rpm. And, despite the layout, focused primarily on use as a mixer, the drill can and drill, and in steel - up to 32 mm in diameter. It is also possible to attach it to a vertical stand, which turns the drill into a full-fledged drilling machine. Main advantages:

No, let's still find something cheaper and more comprehensive. How about a Bosch "blue" series drill? With its 850 watts of power, this drill is still similar to a drill, and it weighs acceptable - 3 kg. At the same time, it is well-assembled and ergonomic to everyone, although the single-stage gearbox limits the torque - for thick solutions I would like to be able to choose a lower one in order to make the attachment easier. Yes, if Metabo is a mixer with a drill function, then Bosch is first and foremost a drill. But we are talking in today's rating about the best drills, is not it? Main advantages:

In power, the Makita is inferior to the Bosch 100 watts, but at the expense of a more heavy-duty gearbox, it can compete on equal terms both in stirring the solution and in drilling large-diameter holes. At the same time, the drill is also somewhat lighter, which affects the convenience of work in the most positive way. The drill is assembled qualitatively and reliably, so given the close prices with the Bosch GBM 1600 RE, it literally goes "nostril to nostril". But we still slightly lower its rating due to less convenient handles. Main advantages:

Top Angle Drills
12 664
High-quality professional tool will help out in the narrowest places, where no ordinary drill can get. The 450-watt electric motor spins the cartridge up to 2400 rpm through a reducer in an aluminum case, allowing you to drill holes in the metal up to 10 mm in diameter - there is enough motor torque not to “squeeze” at the same time. A nice addition to the design is the presence of a spotlight LED: considering the “low profile” key cartridge, the height of the gearbox assembly at the Makita is only 66 mm, so it will often have to work there where the light doesn’t really get and the backlight will be just right. Turns of the drill are regulated by the “turntable” on the power key - the principle customary in many electric drills, the only difference is that the key is pressed not by the index finger, but by the contraction of the brush. At the same time it allows you to quickly change the grip, without losing the possibility of turning on the tool. Attaching a side handle for an angle drill is not a mandatory thing, but it is provided on the “Makit” - these are standard threaded sockets; the handle fits any “grinder”. However, you will have to look for an analogue only if you lose the one that comes with the drill in the kit. Main advantages:

One of the most powerful angle drills inevitably became the most dimensional one - from the end of the cam chuck to the edge of the gearbox housing, it has 89 mm. The weight of the WBE 700 is also tangible - just over 2 kg, the 710-watt motor forces you to make sacrifices. The layout here is absolutely "bulgar" - even the inclusion is carried out by a sliding key under the thumb, which is familiar to the angle grinder. There is also a speed regulator, but they will be thrust into the most ... I mean, they placed it almost at the power cord, so adjusting the maximum speed without taking your hands off the case and the side handle will not work. Found in the drill and a place for high-quality electronics - Metabo traditionally uses here the scheme of maintaining turns under load. There is in it a protection against accidental start-up: if, holding the power key, insert the cord into the socket, the spindle will not start. Exactly the same thing will happen with the loss of electricity in the network: the drill set aside to the side will remain off when the light returns. The Metabo Marathon engine used here has a proprietary brush interlocking system — if they wear excessively, they do not begin to tear down the collector lamella with spring springs, but stop without contact with the collector. Well, in terms of safety, Metabo deserves first place in the ranking of the best angle drills, but, alas, in terms of features and price, it definitely merges with other brands. Main advantages:

For all-inclusiveness, DeWALT is even more interesting than “Makita” - it was possible to reduce its height to as much as 50 mm. However, the power here is lower by 100 watts, but, suddenly, the torque on the spindle is even greater than that of the double Metabo. However, for several reasons, the DeWALT drill goes to the bottom of the rating. If “Makit” and “Metabo” are assembled according to the “Bulgarian” layout - an aluminum angular gearbox is bolted to the plastic case, which is easy to remove to change the lubricant or to access the bearings, here a common plastic case is used, and to get to the gearbox disassemble the entire drill. And, despite the low power of the D21160, the plastic case of the gearbox inspires somehow less than the metal one. The power key has a rather strange shape: it has a recess for the fingers, which, with the grip of the right hand, almost completely enclose the case, pressing the key only with pads. Lefty, taking the drill in his hand, immediately turn it on. In addition, turns are regulated only by the degree of keystrokes, and there is no reverse at all. As a result, if you remember almost the same price, the advantage of both functionality and convenience (especially when working with your left hand) makes Makita just a crushing victory, and only where she can’t even crawl will DeWALT have trumps. Which drill is better to buy?
Of all types of power tools, electric drills are perhaps the most popular: indeed, at home you can safely do without an angle grinder or sandpaper, but the need to drill at least one hole per year arises for everyone. Well, in the shops you can find a drill for every taste: it is suitable and inexpensive, if you plan to use it occasionally, there is also a professional tool for working with all the money. In addition, many models of drills are universal: multi-speed gearboxes allow the drill to work as a screwdriver, impact sleeves - drill bricks and concrete as an ersatz puncher, some drills with a specific grip can also be used as a mixer for mixing the same tile adhesive, if you want repairs. A purchase with a balanced price-performance ratio will not hit the family budget, but it will always help.
When choosing a drill be sure to consider the expected specifics of the work. For example, very few drills, not specifically designed to work as mixer, can actually withstand prolonged mixing of the solution, and the engine and speed controller are overloaded. So the risk to burn a new purchase, especially when it comes to low-cost drills, is large enough. To confidently take on such work, we will definitely need low speed gearbox, which allows the motor to reach normal speeds, effectively cooling at the same time (do not forget that in centrifugal impellers, performance is proportional to the square of the revolutions). But here drill a small diameter with a low-speed gearbox is already uncomfortable. So, it makes sense to look at the drill with multi-speed gearboxes: they will drill as it should, and the mixer-nozzle will be scrolled, and they will be able to do it once or twice with self-tapping screws.
Speaking of budgetary drills, you should definitely stay on gear unit: for a high-quality drill, installation of both the motor rotor and both sides of the spindle on rolling bearings is mandatory, no sleeves. Let even the gearbox be plastic, made in one piece with the body, but the bearings in it must be.
Do i need shock coupling in the gearbox? If you only need to drill a brick or concrete only occasionally, it doesn’t hurt: with a good drill, the hammer drill can only save in “Stalin”, where the bricks sometimes come with a puncher, something is taken hard. For constant work, of course, a punch will be a much better choice not only because of performance, but also because of significantly lower levels of vibration and noise, and impact drills wear out under such conditions quickly, becoming unstressed when the coupling teeth are erased.
Have a good shopping!
