Control of the rear hemisphere of the car - a thing that is difficult to overestimate that when parking, that when driving. Established mirrors for this is not always enough, especially on station wagons and pick-ups with their low visibility. Parktronic partially correct the situation, but they will not be very informative.
Fortunately, modern electronics offers many solutions: an image from a video camera can display both the screen of a multimedia device, a “smart mirror”, and a car TV hanging on a bracket. Many DVRs not only “write” the signal from the camera facing back, but also automatically switch the display to it when the reverse gear is engaged.
However, often the car’s multimedia system only has the ability to display video, but does not have a rear view camera in the kit. It is easy to equip it: good compact car rear view cameras will not be difficult to find in the auto shop. Structurally, they can be divided into five types:
- Mortise cameras they look like a peephole - they are installed in the same way into a round hole that will have to be cut somewhere. They are the most difficult to install, and the attachment point must be selected correctly - most models will not be able to adjust the angle of view.
- Camera liningbolted through a hole in the plastic cladding near the rear room ceiling lamps. They can already be adjusted a little, and the “amount of damage” is less - the holes are drilled small and in an inconspicuous place.
- Cameras on brackets have a swivel base, which makes it possible after adjustment to adjust the angle of view as desired. Sometimes they are placed inside the cabin (for example, at the rear window on the station wagon) - and they will not steal it, and the dirt will not fall. On cheap models, the bracket is hard - to adjust it you can only bend.
- Camera framesas the name implies, are embedded in the perimeter of the license plate frame. They stand out minimally, but not for everyone: on many cars, the back room area is so actively polluted that the camera will only benefit from this place in dry weather.
- Camera Ceiling replace the regular license plate ceiling, hence the low versatility (each model is designed for a specific machine), and the same problems with pollution: it’s impossible to choose a clean installation site. What kind of matrix is used, the manufacturer does not disclose, and the mere mention of the brand SHARP, in general, does not mean anything to us. Honestly, even the very mention of the CMOS-matrix looks strange - the author was not too lazy to look into the "Sharpov" catalog and did not find a single matrix suitable for rear-view cameras. But let's talk about the good. The picture gives a decent parking camera, albeit with distortions in the fields that are inevitable due to wide-angle optics. The only "but" - not everywhere it will be possible to fix such a camera, there may not be enough space.
Note to the manufacturer’s honor that it does not hide the type of matrix applied, limited to blurry phrases and basic characteristics. The OmniVision OV7950 matrix, specially developed for such applications, is installed here: it encodes the video signal into composite NTSC (and at 60 fps) using its own resources, has EEPROM memory for screen overlays (in this case, for parking lines). The autoexposition works 16 points for her, so she adapts quickly to changes in lighting, and in winter she doesn’t go blind from the glare of light on the snow, exposing the overexposed location. Unfortunately, by its modern standards, the dynamic range is already too small: the matrix is more than ten years old! Well, in front of us is a brand that has not been whipped up in a hurry - Alpine needs no introduction. But the price, of course, this rear view camera is much more than the Chinese nouneyma, which is sold at every corner. Is she justified? Let's go point by point.
First note the image quality. No matter how ridiculous it may sound for VGA resolution (640x480), but the picture on the monitor in the cabin from this camera will indeed be much clearer and more discriminating than that of cheap models. In addition, two modifications of the camera are available - if the HCE-C1100 uses the usual composite “tulip” as an output, then the HCE-C1100D uses a proprietary connector to connect to Alpine head units with multimedia displays without any “collective farm”. The second is the quality of the optics (in fact, the first depends largely on this). Aperture lens - f / 2.0, so that the camera copes well in low light. The horizontal field of view is 131 degrees; this can be considered a reasonable compromise between visibility and detail. Barrel distortion, of course, is present, but the central part of the frame, which is most important when parking, practically does not suffer from it. The third is the quality of the matrix. Allow meagerly sized 1 / 3.7 ”, but with a wide enough dynamic range to draw both shadows and light: the image does not turn into a medium gray porridge. The standard bracket is mounted on four points, allows the camera to swing when setting up with a decent course. Rather, it is necessary to assume that an ultra-wide fisheye is used on the camera, and in the “normal image” mode the middle is simply sprinkling from the frame. In the panorama mode, the review is really wide, but with the expected huge distortion, from which the digital correction would hardly have helped. Two additional camera modes are “top view” and “right-left view”, when the middle is cut out of the “panorama” and the car’s surroundings on the sides become more discriminating on the small monitor of the multimedia system.
