The best batteries for winter
While your car is fully functional, the smell of a car dealership has not yet eroded in the nooks of the glove compartment, and synthetic oil with a low-temperature viscosity index of 5W or 0W has been poured into the motor, you can forget about the existence of the battery. Starting problems in the winter you will encounter perhaps because of low-quality fuel or left dimensions included. But then many details in the aggregate will start to thoroughly spoil life: the contacts here are a little oxidized (and in powerful low-voltage circuits, where the account goes for hundreds of amps of current, even a few tenths of an ohm is serious), there the nozzles began to spray fuel worse ... And As a result, the car, which has long been pleased with its trouble-free start-up, is already beginning to be capricious, and it is time to change the old battery. And what exactly? For a car enthusiast who has already faced the choice of wires for lighting and has expanded the circle of acquaintances in the parking lot, this question does not seem idle.
What to look for when choosing a battery for the winter?
If you don’t go into particularities and differences in production technology and the packaging of plates in banks, the chemistry of the processes occurring during charge-discharge cycles, then there’s nothing to look at on the battery. The main parameters marked on any battery are its capacity and the cold-scrolling current (also known as the starting current). But, frankly, a comparison of these parameters in neighboring batteries will actually do little.
Let's start with containers. It is simply determined by the discharge of a fully charged battery with a rated current. At the same time, the behavior of batteries is not linear: a battery, according to the marking, is capable of giving 6 amps for 10 hours, 60 amps will give away in less than an hour, but in less time. And for what exactly - it depends on the state of the battery, and on its design features. And then suddenly it will be revealed (and not at the most opportune moment) that a new bought 70 amp amp-hour battery surrenders earlier than the 55 ampernik from a neighbor, already smiling mischievously and drawing a wire from the trunk.
Well maybe at least starting current will tell us something? In principle, the conditions for measuring the cold-scrolling current are already closer to “combat” —the current that the battery is able to give for a specified time at a negative temperature is fixed. And what will happen if the temperature drops below the threshold set by the standard (and these -18 ° C for many regions of Russia is far from the limit)? Do not worry, the malicious neighbor has not yet removed the wires far.
There is also such a thing as battery backup capacity. This is the time (yes, the backup capacity is measured in minutes), which the battery can deliver a standardized current of 25 amperes until the voltage drops to 10.5 V. And at what temperature? That's the same thing.
And we do the same, oh-wei? All that we can say to your ears with your mouth is that theoretically a battery with a larger capacity and starting current is better. At least, the high starting current promises us a decent plate area and low internal resistance, when working on a powerful load, it is fundamentally important (we recall the school course of physics and Ohm's law for the complete circuit). But here is not so simple.
Here is a new battery on the rack. And the brand is loud, and it promises a lot of cold scrolling amps on it ... The problem is that the tests neither by EN nor DIN nor by any other do not involve several attempts at start-up. As a result, the owner of record indicators of starter current can actually demonstrate them during the test, and then barely turn the starter. This is influenced by many features of the battery design, up to the distance between the plates and the design of the separator. And the joy of a new purchase will be ruined again by a neighbor, who doesn’t have a new battery and has less ampere, but for some reason the car starts better.
The result is obvious: comparing the characteristics of several batteries "in the forehead", one can understand the experience after the start of frost that everything is not so simple. So, it's time to turn to someone else's experience - what, if not practice, will show the advantages and disadvantages of different batteries?
Best batteries for winter - 2018 Rating
A place | Name | Rating | Price |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Tyumen Premium | 9.6 / 10 | 3 700 |
2 | Varta Blue Dynamic | 9.5 / 10 | 5 510 |
3 | TAB Polar | 9.4 / 10 | 5 000 |
4 | Mutlu Silver Calcium | 9.3 / 10 | 5 250 |
Tyumen Premium
3 700 (64 Ah)
Battery Tyumen Premium - a clear leader in terms of price / efficiency of the winter start. Accumulators of premium brands from Europe with similar basic parameters can now cost almost twice as much, but at the same time they will not provide such stability in severe frosts: Tyumen does not strike with characteristics, but simply does its job confidently. So, do we overpay for other batteries only for the brand? In fact, not only. The scourge of lead-acid batteries is a detrimental effect on them of a deep discharge. And now the Tyumen batteries do not like it, which must be borne in mind, not raping the battery by trying to run to the last, not forgetting to monitor the charge level. Although, even if the “Tyumen” and an unexpected end, it is worth it ... We note in particular that the battery, being absolutely classical in design, sets the cans plugs for show not in vain - you should not forget to add distilled water and check the density of the electrolyte. In any case, it is for the winter performance of these batteries, we will give first place in the rating. You are unlikely to receive so many confident attempts to launch for such money otherwise. |

Varta Blue Dynamic
5 510 (60 Ah)
According to the stated characteristics, this series, of course, is less attractive than the more expensive Silver Dynamic, but at normal temperatures for our winter, they behave very similarly. Then why not save, especially without losing anything? To the number of advantages of these accumulators, we shall attribute the decent stability of the characteristics without “lottery”, which the Irkutsk “Beast” suffers, for example. Well and, importantly, Blue Dynamic has a decent survivability even under not the best operating conditions - for example, if you and the generator are no longer in the best condition, and the alarm system with a radio tape recorder appreciably eats up the charge in the parking lot. Although lately it has been customary to point out that the quality of the Varta is “not the right one”, the brand still holds its position firmly. Is that prices have grown decently ... but, if this moment is crucial, why not pay attention to domestic batteries? There are also worthy options here, as Tyumen has already demonstrated. |

TAB Polar
5 000 (60 Ah)
Resnična slovenska moč! Perhaps the main drawback of the Slovenian “polar” series batteries for a Russian buyer is their low prevalence in stores: the same “Varta” can be found in every corner, but TAB Polar is not such a frequent visitor on the shelves of retail outlets. But, if he turned up to you, it makes sense to think about buying. If, for example, we take a model for 60 ampere-hours, then it will calmly demonstrate the claimed 600 amperes of cold scroll current according to EN. But, as we have already written above, in itself, with severe frosts, this is not a guarantee of a confident launch. However, TAB did not just assign the Polar name to this series: the batteries confidently withstand repeated attempts to start up, rather quickly gain charge after such “violence”. Perhaps the most interesting of these batteries for the winter will be the owners of diesel cars, which for obvious reasons are the most sensitive to low temperatures, and the speed at which the starter rotates the crankshaft fundamentally affects the likelihood of starting. |

Mutlu Silver Calcium
5 250 (60 Ah)
It would seem, where is Turkey - and where is the frost? Nevertheless, it is the Turkish batteries that have earned in our country a good reputation for balancing the characteristics and a good resource. Mutlu rarely gets to the tops of tests, but it does its job reliably, even in the cold. It is possible that Mutlu will lose to someone on the certainty of starting, but only slightly - at least for gasoline engines with fuel injection, we can definitely recommend these batteries to lkz pbvs. Separately, we mention a good charge charge rate - in the winter it is no less important, especially on short trips, when you first “force” the battery with high currents, and then it doesn’t have time to really charge. As a result, the battery gradually reduces the charge, wears out quickly, the morning start-up gets worse. So, even though it’s conditional for the winter “let-up” of Mutlu and at the end of the battery rating for the winter, this does not mean that the Silver Calcium series batteries are so much worse than others. |

... And finally
Anyway, not only in the battery is a guarantee of confident start. Repeatedly, the author had to see how a completely working battery was changed to a new one solely due to the fact that it either badly charges, or twists poorly - but in fact it was enough just clean and tighten properly on the starter and the battery itself (especially, for example, it is familiar from the "Matiz" with their clamps - "bells").
Do not forget about the purity of candles, injectors, fuel quality: no matter how good the battery cranks up the crankshaft, the absence of a normal spark will still not allow the motor to start up normally, and the quality of the spray of the fuel in the winter is most important. The “curve” was sprayed, especially by jets, and not by microscopic drops, and in the warmth it prevents the fuel from evaporating normally, and in the winter - even more so. On diesel engines, preheating (even the simplest one, such as an “impeller from an outlet) gives you a better chance of starting in the morning in a frost than the best battery.
Check work generator: a cold battery and so the worse is gaining charge, and with a lower charge voltage - even more so. It is the undercharging that is much more often the reason to wait for a neighbor with his wires for lighting, and not a “bad battery”: the battery would be glad to spin the engine, but it doesn’t have enough charge.
And, believe me, the question “which battery is better to buy for the winter?” Will not worry you for a long time.
